The Kaleidoscope

I have COVID.

I haven't tested, but other family  members have and their results have came back positive.

We're all ill.

In my case, it started off with a sore throat. The following day, I had a peculiar feeling in my knees and shoulders, then a cough. A fever came after that. Somewhere along the line were headaches and vomiting. Thankfully not much of the latter.

It's very draining. I spent the late afternoon asleep yesterday. When I woke up, I had a runny nose.

It brings with it a kaleidoscope of symptoms.

Rating Drink Powders VIII: Skittles Edition

A few weeks ago, when I was ordering some drink powders for the Rating Drink Powders series I have ran here on the blog since last year, I came across a box of a Skittles branded powders. Unfortunately, the box had sold out, so I thought I would keep an eye out for it to be restocked.

Well, it was restocked alright. I not only came across the original flavour I had wanted to try. I also noticed that there were two other varieties to buy online: Tropical Punch and Wild Berry Punch.

Now that I have the three powders, I have to let them square off to see which Skittles drink is the best of the trio.

So, let's begin...

Skittles Drink Powderd

Skittles Original Punch
This is the drink that's supposed to blend the original Skittles flavour in. When I opened the sachet, I sensed a bit of strawberry and was not sure whether I would like the drink. Then, once the powder was added to the water, it had a red flavour which strengthened the little anxiety I had that it would taste of strawberry.

Well - after a few sips (or rather big gulps), I was relieved to taste no strawberry. None of the Skittles flavours stood out, however. It just tasted.. fruity. Therefore, it tasted exactly as it should.

Rating: *** 1/2

Skittles Tropical Punch
The colour of the Tropical Punch drink was a thick cloudy blue, if that makes sense. Visually, it reminded me of a Soda Stream drink I enjoyed as a child - Mr T's Knockout Punch. Ironically, this Skittles drink, just like the others, are 'punch'. In this case, going by the flavours of the real sweets we're meant to taste a combination of the following: banana berry, kiwi lime, pineapple passionfruit, strawberry starfruit, mango tangelo.

Just like with the original, no single flavour stood out. It was a nice refreshing drink, but so was the first.

Rating: *** 1/2

Skittles Wild Berry Punch
When I tore the sachet, and caught a whiff of the powder, it brought back memories of a sweet I used to find at the shop on the way to school back in the day. It had a plastic top and you would pull it off and it looked like a lipstick (Well, to be fair - it more resembled a stick of faded pink chalk). It had a cherry, possibly berry, flavour.

I didn't get the sensation of the lipstick-chalk sweet once I drank the purply coloured drink. The taste was, just like with the other two Skittles drinks, very nice and refreshing without one flavour overpowering any other.

For what it's worth, the flavours inside the wild berry version of the sweets are: berry punch, strawberry, melon berry, wild cherry and raspberry.

Rating: *** 1/2

Result
On paper, it's a three-way tie with each getting three-and-a-half stars.

If I had three packets in front of me and told I had to choose one to remain and the other two to go forever, I would - without hesitation - pick the blue box. Therefore, the winner - by a nose - is the Tropical Punch.

The Cena Anniversary

I've just finished watching last night's edition of WWE Raw and felt compelled to write about something. Or rather - someone.

The show celebrated it being twenty years since John Cena debuted with the company. It opened up with film of him walking into the building with a guard of honour of current WWE staff.

Then, throughout the episode, they showed clips and had other wrestlers send in messages to Cena. Some were even from wrestlers who currently work for AEW, which was somewhat surprising.

Cena came down and cut a really nice promo in which he talked about how the fans had made him what he is today. He got slightly emotional doing it.

John Cena (27/6/22)

My takeaway is that episode strengthened my long-known opinion of how much of a professional Cena is.

I grew up watching the Hulk Hogan era. It's very fair to say Hogan did a lot of work for charities, but - as a child - I didn't really show interest in that side of pro wrestling. As an adult, and with what I'd like to believe - a better understanding of the business both on and off screen, I see John Cena and everything he does and he really comes across as the pro's pro.

Every good thing that guy gets is deserved.

Doing Another Codeword Puzzle: The Clive Myrie Edition

The current issue of the Codeword magazine I get each month arrived in the post last week.

I leafed through it and noticed that one of the 'Star Codeword' puzzles - in which the face of a celebrity is featured and their name is found inside the puzzle itself - had a picture of the BBC's Clive Myrie.

Taking a picture of part of the puzzle, I thought it would be funny to tweet the newsreader and host of Mastermind.

Clive Myrie Codeword Puzzle Tweet

I sent the picture across to Myrie asking him 'any idea who this bloke is in the codeword puzzle I'm attempting?'

After sending the tweet, I had a go at the puzzle itself. If you've followed my interest in codeword puzzles since I first attempted one a little under two years ago, you'll know that less than twenty minutes to complete one is my goal.

Look how close I came. Twenty seconds over!

Clive Myrie Codeword Puzzle

The following morning, I opened the Twitter account and laughed out loud when I noticed that Clive had actually seen my tweet and responded.

Bale Goes Hollywood

The big football news from yesterday was that Gareth Bale is set to join Los Angeles FC of the MLS on a one-year deal which could have an 18-month extension added on top.

It was a big story to me because I had been following all the speculation that he would sign for his hometown club - Cardiff City.

My gut told me he wouldn't. That turned out to be the case after all.

The reason why I didn't think Bale would come to Cardiff is because, in my opinion, there is a strong chance that that he could find himself in a relegation fight in a season when he was just looking to play games to keep match fit in preparation for the World Cup later this year.

That's what I surmise anyway.

Of course, Bale will still find competition in the MLS. However, there is a lot less pressure than what he may have found himself having to deal with at home.

Wales has always been his priority when it comes to his career. I think he made the right move even though I would have loved to have seen him as a Bluebird.

Ironically, it didn't feel like the right time to come to Cardiff even though it was an opportune time with him being a free agent.

Over 365 Days Later

Last June, I wrote about buying my first Amazon Kindle. It was a purchase I had contemplated, on-and-off, for over ten years. I followed the post up, over ten weeks later, with a progress report.

In the update, I stated that I had used the device every day since I first switched it on. The daily usage has continued into this year.

Kindle Stats June 2022

You can see, in the image above, that yesterday was the 367th straight day of reading using my Kindle.

I cannot see a day when this streak will come to an end because the device has become a part of my daily routine. Especially at night time when I am trying to shut down at the end of the day.

Even after a year of usage, I am still surprised how all-in I have become with eBooks because I valiantly fought, for many, many years, in favour of physical books.

I suppose I still prefer the smell and feel of having a proper book in my hand. That hasn't completely ended. However, I find the convenience of the eBook reader to be a very strong plus hence my constant use of the Kindle in the year I've owned one.

As of the time of writing I have read sixty-seven books on the Kindle. At the end of the ten week update, I listed the nine titles I had read up to that point. Here's everything I've read since:

I Try The Crispy Chicken Italiano

On June 13th, I published a post in which I wrote about my experience trying one of the Italian-inspired burgers McDonald's has brought out for its 'Taste of Italy' summer promotion.

The Italian Stack was meant to, as the reviewers claimed, taste like lasagne. In the post, I noted that the sauce did make the burger taste like the famous Italian pasta dish.

As well as The Italian Stack, there is another burger. This one is The Crispy Chicken Italiano. I had no desire to try it.

Until I woke up this morning and decided I would have one for lunch, that is.

McDonald's Crispy Chicken Italiano (2022)

The McDonald's website describes the Italian chicken offering as 'a delicious chicken fillet topped with a juicy tomato slice, mozzarella, a basil pesto style sauce, red onion and lettuce served on a soft freshly toasted ciabatta style bun'.

McDonald's Crispy Chicken Italiano (2022)

When it arrived, the burger looked as described. It had a lot of lettuce, the 'juicy tomato slice' and a big sheet of mozzarella. The toppings looked so abundant that they hid the chicken itself.

I cannot recall ever seeing a McDonald's burger looking so nice when it comes to lettuce and tomato. I often get it a lot with the food I purchase from Burger King. McDonald's? Close to never.

After taking a few bites, I noticed the pesto flavour. It brought back memories of a pesto salad I used to buy from Asda. The pesto was more powerful as I neared the end of the burger.

As for the chicken itself - it seemed like it was more herby than the usual fillets you find at McDonald's. With that said, I don't know if that was just the pesto ingredient forcing me to reach that conclusion.

McDonald's Crispy Chicken Italiano (2022)

It was nice. On top of that, it felt more premium than the usual McDoanald's menu items. That's got to be because of the toppings and sauce!

With all that said - even though I enjoyed the burger, just like with The Italian Stack, I don't think I would ever go out of my way to buy The Crispy Chicken Italiano again.

The Crispy Chicken Italiano is available until July 29. After that, a new range of summer-themed products will launch.  I might give those a try when that time comes.

Thoughts After Watching Obi-Wan Kenobi

The following post was written yesterday afternoon with it scheduled to go live at 12am BST today

I've just finished watching the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi - Disney Plus' most recent Star Wars series - and I thought I'd share some closing thoughts after having watched each episode religiously over the past five weeks.

Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+

Before I even get into this series, I must first draw attention to what is a HUGE elephant in the room.

On December 18 2020, shortly after the series was announced by Disney, I shared my anguish that Disney was about to ruin something that had been a part of Star Wars canon since the first movie - Episode IV: A New Hope - because, in Obi-Wan's fight with Darth Vader, they referred to their previous duel as being the last time they met (this was when Obi-Wan and Anakin fought to what Obi-Wan thought was to the death and left an evil Anakin to burn on the fiery planet of Mustafar).

I still feel that they should not have changed that narrative. In this series, which is set ten years after Revenge of the Sith (when Anakin and Obi-Wan had the aforementioned duel), Kenobi finds out that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker and they do indeed meet again. This ultimately tarnishes the scene in A New Hope, which - as I pointed out almost two years ago - was what was supposed to have been their first meeting in as many years.

Obi-Wan Kenobi did indeed have the rematch, or rather: rematches, of the century. So, yeah, I was slightly disillusioned by that. However, other than that HUGE issue, I have to admit.. I enjoyed the six episodes.

It was wonderful to catch back up with Ob-Wan after the events of Revenge of the Sith and see how things were like leading up to his final adventure years later.

Back when the programme was in production, I read that Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker would not have major parts in the series. Well, that report was half-wrong.

Leia was a key part in this series because Obi-Wan has to rescue her. I have to give two giant thumbs up to the casting because the actress who played Leia was good. Plus, the wardrobe and stylists made her look like a mini Carrie Fisher.

As for Luke Skywalker? Well - he was in the series but played a small part in the story. However, we did get to see his first proper introduction to Obi-Wan at the conclusion of the final episode.

Darth Vader was more villainous in this series than he had been in any of the movies or other spin-offs I've seen, or read, him in.

I really hope there is a way to bring this series back for at least one more season.

The 4 Ps (Paramount Plus Product Placement)

There was an excellent job of product placement on today's episode of Neighbours.

Glen Donnelly was sitting at home, whilst trying to fight off his painkiller addiction, and decided to switch on the television.

When the TV came on, the character was greeted by the Paramount Plus screen.

Paramount Plus on Neighbours

I thought it was clever placement considering that today - June 22nd 2022 -  is the day that Paramount Plus has launched over here in the UK and Ireland.

It was no coincidence that Paramount Plus was given the short screen time. Channel 5, which airs Neighbours in Great Britain, is owned by Paramount Networks.

Paramount is going all-in as it pertains promoting the launch.

As well as today's brief scene in Neighbours, I saw that Sylvester Stallone was in London yesterday plugging his Paramount+ series - Tulsa Kings (coming later this year), Kevin Costner appeared live in Lorraine Kelly's studio this morning to talk about his programme Yellowstone and Halo - one of the programmes exclusive to the streaming service - will air its premiere episode on Channel 5 this evening.

Live Raw

I ended up watching the first hour of Monday Night Raw live this morning. I didn't plan to. I woke up and saw that I had a message from somebody telling me that there was going to be announcement that Rhea Ripley was out of her WWE Raw Women's Championship challenge against Bianca Belair at WWE Money in the Bank and that a new contender was to be set up.

I really dislike watching the programme live. The commercials irk me. It's so much easier to have the remote control in hand on a Tuesday morning - or Saturday morning, if we're talking Smackdown - and being able to fast forward through.

Carmella won the number one contender match and she'll now meet Belair in over week from now.

Also on the bit I caught last night, Vince McMahon once again came down to address the audience. This time, he said that John Cena was coming back next week (we already knew this) and then left.

McMahon coming down every episode - so far -since he was relieved of his duties as CEO, is a game, in my opinion. It's an attempt to let the board of directors - who are looking into allegations - will see how much the audience wants him around.

On Friday, when he first did it, I had a feeling that - MAYBE - it was his way of saying goodbye. After last night, I am convinced it's to send a message to the people near the top of the WWE totem pole.

Paramount+ Is Almost Here

Paramount's streaming service - Paramount+ - launches over here in the UK on Wednesday.

Paramount+ UK and Ireland Launch 2022

I had no interest in it. That was until I found out that Ray Donovan: The Movie might be available to stream on it.

As I wrote in March, I was unaware that a TV movie was made to tie up the loose ends that were left when the series was cancelled a few years ago.

The film came out on Showtime in the US on January 14th of this year. I found out about it more than a couple of months later.

If I know for sure that the movie is on there from day one, I will sign up for the free trial and quit before the subscription kicks in.

I have annual subscriptions to the services provided by Amazon and Disney and pop in and out with the content on Netflix, so I am content not to pick up another service.

For now.

The reason why I went down the 'For Now' route is because I read that there's a series starring Sylvester Stallone coming to Paramount+ at the end of this year.

I might dip in just for that.

Lindy's 2022

The American football season is just around the corner.

The first sign landed on my doormat yesterday morning when Lindy's Pro Football 2022 Season Preview came in the post.

Lindy's 2022 NFL Season Preview

I received the Los Angeles cover. I suppose the newsagents here in the UK will all have this edition because the Rams are the current Super Bowl Champions.

Each time I buy Lindy's, I think back to the very first time I bought one.

I was in a newsagent in the middle of nowhere, west Wales during the summer of 1995. I looked for something to read on the coach back home and Lindy's stood out.

There was a many-year gap between my first and next purchase. However, I have tried to buy it each season for at least the last fifteen years or so.

I guess I am loyal to the title simply because it was the first publication I ever bought. They're certainly one of my favourite aids to building up anticipation for upcoming seasons.

As of the time of this post, there are eighty-one days 'til kick off. It's coming.

Changes

It's been one of those weeks when it comes to following professional wrestling news. Or was it?

A few days ago, it was reported that the board of directors of World Wrestling Entertainment were investigating Vince McMahon for an alleged three million Dollar settlement he gave to a former employee he is alleged to have had an affair with. As well as that, they're looking into a 100% pay rise the woman was awarded during the affair.

As a result of all this, McMahon has stepped down from his duties as CEO of the company. In his place steps his daughter, Stephanie, who had recently taken a leave of absence. She'll head WWE as an interim CEO until the investigation - which started in April - has concluded.

On the surface, it seems like a big change. For now. However, it was also stated that Vince McMahon will continue working on creative.

As well as that, they thought it was a good idea to have Vince show up on Smackdown. If ever there was a time to make a mark as an acting CEO, Stephanie McMahon-Levesque had the perfect opportunity to do so yesterday by saying 'No' to her father.

But, you can't say that to the person in charge of creative, can you?

Heatwave

I'm sitting in the middle of a heatwave.

I've just asked Siri what the temperature is and he's told me it's twenty-five degrees Celsius.

Last night was a humid one as well. I managed to fall asleep okay, but woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back to sleep for hours.

Bring me the autumn...

...please.

Trying 'Eggo' Products

I have never tried Kellogg's Eggo waffles because - as far as I am aware - they have never sold the frozen waffles over here in the UK.

With that all said, I have - over the past few weeks - managed to eat other breakfast products Kellogg's have produced bearing the Eggo logo.

The first thing I tried was Kellogg's Eggo breakfast cereal.

Kellogg's Eggo Breakfast Cereal

They cereal is shaped liked mini waffles (of course!) and tasted like maple. They were quite crunchy even near the bottom of the bowl before I finished off my breakfast.

Kellogg's Eggo Breakfast Cereal Bowl

If I had to liken the Eggo cereal to anything I have tried before, I'll have to state that - when I was eating them - I couldn't help but reminisce about a cereal from the past.

It was Kellogg's Start. I first recall trying that cereal back in the 1980's. I recall buying a box or two from Asda  few years back. However, it has since been discontinued.

Start didn't have a maple flavour like the Eggo cereal. However, the texture, crunchies and experience sure reminded me of it.

Next up is something I tried yesterday morning: Pop-Tarts with the Eggo branding.

Kellogg's Eggo Pop-Tarts

I am sure I've written on this very blog many times in the past that I have been a fan of Pop-Tarts since I was first introduced to them in 1987 by my American relatives. At the time, they were not available in shops over here in the UK.

They finally made their way to my shores sometime during the 1990's. And they're still here albeit with the traditional flavours only. I have to seek the zanier varieties in online stores which import them.

I very much liked the Eggo Pop-Tart. Just like the cereal, there was a maple taste to stick with the waffle theme.

Kellogg's Eggo Pop-Tarts

Now all I'd like to do is try the real products. What'dya say Kellogg's UK?!

Last Words II

On June 4th, I published a post titled Last Words in which I speculated who would say the last words in the final episode of Neighbours.

At the time of writing, I was under the impression that Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue were going to be in the closing scene of the soap which has been on air for thirty-seven years and will end over the summer. I stated that the correct call should be to have Karl or Susan Kennedy finish things off.

It turns out that the Jason and Kylie, or rather 'Scott and Charlene' rumour was just that. A rumour. The most recent reports point to Jackie Woodburne - who portrays Susan Kennedy - being the person who'll say the last words on August 1st.

Neighbours Logo

Susan Kennedy, and her husband - Karl, joined the programme when it was in its ninth year. However, they have been mainstays in all that time. In my opinion, it was only fair for either one of them to take it home.

Stefan Dennis, who was in the series on day one as Paul Robinson, spent a few years away from the soap. He would have been my third choice behind either of the Kennedys.

G1 Climax Expands

New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Climax is coming up very soon and the promoting of the month-long tournament began over the weekend during the company's Dominion show.

The participants were revealed in a video clip. That's what normally happens. There was a difference this year, though.

For the first time in over twenty years, there will be more than twenty participants.

G1 Climax 32

The video initially teased that it would be the usual twenty grapplers with ten in each block. However, the image changed and eight more shadows were added.

I haven't looked into how the blocks will work this time. I suppose it will be four blocks with seven wrestlers in each group and then there will be a playoff between the top wrestlers in each block.

Something similar happened in 2000 when they had four blocks of five wrestlers. I surmise that is what will happen this year albeit with two more names per group.

It's going to be a long summer!

I Try The Italian Stack

The Italian Stack

McDonald's has brought out a new lasagne-inspired burger for the start of the summer.

Someone on The Sun website reviewed it. She seemed very taken by its similarity to a real lasagne. The burger is made up of, and I'll quote the McDonald's website, '..layers of two 100% beef patties, mozzarella, onions, crispy onions, a rich tomato sauce, lettuce and a smooth cheese sauce all served within a freshly toasted tomato-and-basil flavoured bun'.

I had to try it.

Here's what it looked like as soon as I opened the packaging, which - in a way - is also Italian themed as it looked like a pizza box (if I say so myself).

The Italian Stack

The reviewer in The Sun went overboard with her assessment that it truly tasted like a lasagne. In my opinion, the ONLY ingredient in this thing which made it taste anything like the famous pasta dish is the aforementioned 'rich tomato sauce'. The cheese sauce did nothing to make it give off a lasagne feel. It was all in the tomato sauce. And that's it.

The Italian Stack

Don't get me wrong, it was an enjoyable burger. And if I have to say 'yes, it does taste like a lasagne', I would have to add my point about the tomato sauce being the trick ingredient which would sway to believing it was a lasagne because nothing else does. Not the cheese and definitely not the mozzarella.

To be fair, they could have simply added a couple of pepperoni slices and said 'Hey look, we've created a pizza-inspired burger' and I would have stated 'Yes, yes.. they have!'

The Italian Stack is part of McDonald's 'Taste of Italy' range which will be available in restaurants right through to July 26. Other products currently in this themed promotion are a Crispy Chicken Italiano burger and a McFlurry which tastes of Tiramisu.

Remembering Larry The Lamb

I was looking through the TV guide on my cable box yesterday morning and noticed Larry the Lamb was about to air on Talking Pictures TV.

To steal - and adjust - a line from Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode IV: now that was a name I hadn't heard in a long time.

Back when I was very young, I owned a Larry the Lamb annual. So, I was aware of the programme. However, I couldn't recall ever watching an episode.

I gave it a go yesterday to try and trigger my brain cells.

Larry the Lamb

I tuned it and as soon as I heard Larry the Lamb talk, I knew for sure I had watched it before. I must have simply blocked it from my memory. Or, in layman's terms: forgot.

Larry the Lamb

A quick look on Wikipedia reveals that Larry the Lamb aired on TV between 1972 and 1974. That, I suppose, was the first airings.

I must have watched it in the early 1980's because the annual I own was published for 1982.

A Patriotic Punt

 I had to do this.

Wales World Cup 2022 Bet

Never, in my lifetime, have I had the chance to bet on Wales to win the World Cup with the team confirmed as participants.

On Monday, a few hours after Wales secured a place in Qatar following a 1-0 win against the Ukraine, I noticed they were 200/1 to win the World Cup later this year. I had £2 in my betting account, so backed them £1 each-way.

I am not stupid. I know this bet won't win. I just wanted to do it because I hadn't bet on Wales in a World Cup before and - most importantly - I don't know when I'll ever get to do it again.

That's A Wrap

It was the last day of filming for the cast and crew of Neighbours today.

The BBC Lunchtime News had a small piece all about the programme and its place in popular British culture this afternoon. It contained some classic clips from the soap.

While watching the news bit, I couldn't help but feel a bit sad. Not just for me, but for everyone who is associated with the serial.

I think it could hit me more as we near the final episode, which is set to air on Monday August 1st.

Rating Drink Powders VII

I bought three more packets of drink mixes a few weeks ago and thought I'd do another post in which I rate them.

In this edition, I try powders from the Kool-Aid, Country Time and Sonic brands.

Drink Powders (June 2022)

Kool-Aid Tropical Punch
Tropical Punch is my favourite Kool-Aid flavour, so - when I saw they had an 'On The Go!' version of it - I had to try it.

It tasted almost like how I remembered it. It wasn't as sweet, though. Obviously because of the lack of sugar.

Even though it was lacking somewhat, a sip did take me back to a time when I enjoyed Kool-Aid of this variety. That's worth a few quarters of a star alone.

Rating: *** 3/4

Country Time Raspberry Lemonade
I had Country Time Lemonade in May of 2021 for the first Rating Drinks Powders. I gave it three-and-a-half stars and noted that it reminded me of traditional lemonade I usually buy from supermarkets. This is similar to the traditional pink lemonade that is usually found at supermarkets as well.

If I gave the Country Time Lemonade three-and-a-half, it's only fair I do the same for this flavour.

Rating: *** 1/2

Sonic Strawberry Lemonade
I tried a couple of Sonic drink powders last month. Both received three-and-a-half stars. I'm not keen on strawberry flavoured drinks, and this did nothing to improve that opinion. Therefore, I have to go low.

Another thing which works against this drink is it took a while for the powder to dissolve. That didn't seem to happen with the other two varieties from Sonic.

Rating: **

The Result
It's a win for Kool-Aid's powder. To be fair, seeing as that is my favourite regular Kool-Aid drink, it shouldn't be surprising.

Expect a spin-off from these 'Rating Drink Powders' posts in the future. That's all I'm saying for now.

SummerSlam 1992 Special Edition Coming Soon

Later on this summer, WWE will release the thirtieth anniversary of SummerSlam 1992 on Blu-ray and DVD.

I've already preordered my copy because it is an event that means a lot to me because it was the first major PPV to take place here in Great Britain.

I already own it on VHS (both when I taped it on Sky Sports and the copy which was released months later in the shops) and even transferred the tape to backup. However, I want this special edition because there are 'bonus extras from the time' advertised.

That's all it states. I hope it includes a lot of unseen footage. For example, there was an interlude of sorts during the taping which involved wrestling legends being introduced to the audience. I read about that segment at the time, and was told about it by a classmate who was lucky enough to go to see the show live, but I have never seen it on film.

The main event saw 'The British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith beat Bret 'Hitman' Hart for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. Earlier in the card, 'Macho Man' Randy Savage retained the WWF Championship via a count-out loss to The Ultimate Warrior.

The release date is August 29th, which will be thirty years to the day since the event was filmed at Wembley Stadium. However, the show aired for the first time on PPV/TV a couple of nights later.

The Weekend

This past weekend was one of the most memorable I've experienced in my entire life.

It was technically a four-day weekend if you consider that Thursday and Friday were Bank Holidays in Great Britain due to it being the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The Jubilee was eventful.

The highlight of the entire weekend was Wales' 1-0 win over Ukraine in the World Cup qualifier. I am still, almost forty-eight hours removed from the final whistle, asking myself if it has really happened.

Below is yesterday's issue of the South Wales Echo. It's something I'll treasure and - for the next few days - refer to in order to answer my 'Did it really happen?' thoughts.

The end of the weekend was WWE Hell in a Cell. I was so exhausted from the four days that I ended up falling asleep right before the main event was about to start.

And what a main event it was (I caught it when I woke up a couple of hours later). Cody Rhodes, torn pec and all, won against Seth Rollins.

Qualified

My love for the World Cup began in 1986.

There have been eight tournaments since Mexico.

In all of those nine tournaments, one thing was always missing.

Not anymore.

I will finally get to cheer my home nation on the big stage.

That is all. For now.

Qatar Or Bust

Even though there's a WWE event tonight, the only thing I am really looking forward to is to see if Wales manages to get a win against Ukraine and secure a place in the 2022 World Cup.

It'll be the first time, in my lifetime, that my national team will make it to the tournament. The last time they competed on the World Cup stage was at Sweden '58.

With everything that is going on in Ukraine right now, it's safe to conclude that Wales will not enter the game as the people's favourites.

My fingers are crossed.

Last Words

Earlier this week, I read some reports that the final words - on the last ever episode of Neighbours - will be said by Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan.

Okay, if this speculation is true, I have a  slight problem with it.

In my opinion, the only persons I believe should have the last words are the current longest-running characters in the soap: Karl and Susan Kennedy.

I am well aware that Jason, but especially Kylie, became megastars because of the popularity of Neighbours and it would be fitting to close with both of them having the last dialogue. However, I feel it should go to Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne who have both played their roles since joining the cast in 1994.

Nostalgia shouldn't win in this case. Longevity should.

I have visions of the final episode seeing Scott and Charlene Robinson renewing their vows to mirror one of the soap's biggest deals when they were married in 1987 (or 1988 when it aired over here in the UK).

The nuptials between the two popular characters scored huge television ratings back then with two million tuned in for the Australian airing and ten times that amount for the November 8th 1988 UK showing on BBC 1.

Going Platinum

We're currently celebrating the Queen's platinum jubilee over here in Great Britain.

As it stands, Queen Elizabeth II is the third longest reigning monarch that is 'verifiable by exact dates'.

The current standing sees her majesty on 70 years and 117 days. She will pass Thailand's Bhumibol Adulyqdej (9th June 1946 - October 13th 2016) in ten days and then has to contend with Louis XIV, who reigned over France from May 14th 1643 to September 1st 1715 (72 years, 110 days).

Of the current living monarchs, Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is following Elizabeth II on that list with a reign of fifty-four years and 241 days.

That's enough research for me this morning. It'll be off by a day come this time tomorrow.

The Verdict

The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ended yesterday when the jury came back from deliberations to declare that Heard had to pay damages to her former husband.

I watched a lot of the trial. And when I say 'a lot', I mean A LOT.

Depp's team absolutely put on a better fight than Heard's. However, I thought that the result would end up being close to a tie. After all, Depp failed to sue The Sun Newspaper in the London courts after its headline called the actor a 'Wife Beater'.

I thought Depp would win the UK case. I guess that, seeing him lose over here, set my expectations low and felt both parties would come out losing.

It was interesting to follow the trial live. It's not something I would like to do again for a very long time, though. It took up - and, if I were to be honest: wasted - a lot of my time.

Looking Back At The 2002 World Cup

Today is June 1st 2022.

Yesterday, well - it was obviously May 31st. I had written the blog post and was thinking of things I could write about over the upcoming month and knew there was one thing I just had to write about.

I wanted to dedicate at least one post to the 20th anniversary of the 2002 FIFA World Cup - my favourite football tournament both from a wagering and enjoyment perspective.

So, yesterday - I was sat in the living room and mentioned to my family members that 'the 20th anniversary of the 2002 World Cup is coming up. What a time that was'.

I recounted a story of a bet I placed on the opening game. Something I will bring up every now and again to anyone who's willing to listen. Or read.

'I'm going to write about that game on its anniversary' I thought to myself. 'As soon as I get back to the PC, I'll check out the actual date and then write the post on that day'.

I checked the date of the opener late last night.

May 31 2002.

Damnit.

To be fair, my story really started on May 30th 2002 anyway. I was at the local bookmakers and picked up one of their World Cup betting slips. On the paper, you could have bet on the team you thought would be the tournament winner, who you thought could win the golden boot and there, on the right hand side, was the long list of all the opening group games which allowed you to have a gamble on the match results.

I already had a bet on Brazil to win the tournament. My focus was on the group games.

The first fixture stood out to me. 10/1 for Senegal to beat France. I immediately thought that Senegal was not being respected at all.

'I'm gonna put a fiver on Senegal for sure,' I told my dad.

Then, I looked at all of the other games on the sheet. I noticed a handful of other appealing winners. But then realisation set in.

If I were to win the bet on Senegal, I'd have to sit through the rest of the group games before I could cash in.

Off I went, back to the betting office, and picked up another betting slip. Instead of sticking around to place my bets, I went back home and filled in both sheets.

The first was the £5 on Senegal. On the second, I had an accumulator with seven or eight results I needed.

With the bets placed the evening before, I sat in my living room the following afternoon watching the opening ceremony and then came time for the kick off.

Senegal surprised the world by beating the French 1-0. That was the post-game narrative, anyway.

As soon as the final whistle blew, I immediately made my trek back to the shop with my winning betting slip.

'Did you really think they'd win?' the lady behind the counter asked me as she handed over my £55.

'I wouldn't have bet on them if I didn't.' I responded.

It's now twenty years later and I still don't regret the cocky retort. She did ask a silly question, am I right?

The winning bet on Senegal was the start of many. I won s betting on Ronaldo and Rivaldo to score any time in their games for Brazil. I also had Ronaldinho in some of those games, but it was Ronaldo and Rivaldo who made me the most from those gambles.

I even won over £65 from the accumulator I placed at the same time as the Senegal gamble.

It wasn't just the fun of the betting which makes me nostalgic for 2002.

With the tourney co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, the early gfgames would kick off in our mornings. I was not acclimatised to watching football at that time of day. Reminding myself of sitting in a pub (with Appletiser because I had to go to work later!), with friends and colleagues, watching football in those 2002 summer mornings brings some good memories back.

I still remind myself of those early kick offs occasionally. Watching New Japan Pro Wrestling live, in what are my mornings, causes those nostalgic flood gates to reopen.

With the G1 Climax on the horizon, maybe it's time to stock up on the Appletiser.
