Fade To Black

It must have been two weeks ago while watching Raw that I thought to myself, 'matches never end during commercial breaks'. I was inspired to write something on here about it there and then but I forgot all about it.

Well, the WWE did me a favour on Monday night. They went one better.

Or could it be worse?

The main event of the episode featured Triple H defending his newly won WWE title against Randy Orton. The match must have been in or around the twenty minute mark when the cameras jumped to the editing truck which is based outside the arena.

In the truck were the countless number of monitors with the staff at the desks producing the live show. William Regal - the general manager of Raw and new King of the Ring - entered the studio and began berating the staff. He was on a power trip and was angry at the fans for booing him during his coronation earlier in the episode. He then proceeded to order the director to put the show off the air. The director refused so Regal knocked him down then did the honours himself.

The screen went into black and all the viewers at home could hear was the match continuing until that too went out.

It was an intriguing finish to the show. As an aside, the match itself was called off when William Regal came down and ordered the referee to stop it. It wasn't just the audience at home that were robbed of the finish.

I wasn't sure how to respond to it at first. Sure, it was anti-climatic after the build-up they had given to the title match throughout the show but I can see why they did it. It's intention was to put heat on William Regal as well as promote the same match on pay-per-view in three weeks.

What ever positive interest they got in the product from the end of Raw was flushed away on ECW last night.

The ECW show ended with Mike Adamle dropping his headset and walking off set. Tazz - his co-announcer - followed shortly after leaving the main event to be aired without commentary.

For two days straight the WWE had screwed with the fans at home in the closing moments of their shows. I think that's ridiculous.

The people at home invest time sitting there watching the show. You don't want to anger them by doing these unprofessional looking things to get a slight buzz of interest.

This buzz is only short-term, is it really worth doing it if it's going to turn the fans away for the long-term?

Champions' League Semi-Finals : Part II

Last week, I predicted that the scores for the first leg of the Champions' League would be a 1-0 win for Liverpool against Chelsea and a 1-1 draw in the Barcelona versus Manchester United game.

Both matches ended in a draw.

The match featuring the two English teams finished 1-1 with the advantage now going to Chelsea on the away goal rule. The Barcelona and Manchester United game ended with no goals.

I predicted in Part One that Chelsea and Manchester United will win in their home ties so there isn't really more I can't add anything else other than to guess the scores. So, without further ado:

Man Utd 1 Barcelona 0 (1-0 agg)
Chelsea 2 Liverpool 1 (3-2 agg)

Backlash From Backlash

Here are a few notes and observations from last night's Backlash pay-per-view

- I was starting to get tired with a little over an hour to go so went to bed and watched the rest of it this morning.

- Going in to the event, I saw it as a one match show. I wasn't interested in anything other than the Batista v Shawn Michaels match. I thought that match was good although I thought the two title matches were a little bit better.

- The Shawn Michaels leg injury was done in a way that not even I could tell whether it was legit or not!

- Mick Foley as color commentator of Smackdown will be interesting. He did a good job last night in his initial outing. What the hell was he wearing, though!?

- Big Show vs Great Khali was like watching King Kong against Godzilla in one of those black-and-white monster movies.

- Or were those movies in colour?

- I liked Randy Orton as WWE champion. I hope they go with him again in the near future. He plays the cocky heel role well. The reason why is simple - he's a prick in real-life. Allegedly.

- Will Triple H keep the spinning belt or will they now revert back to the regular looking one?

- Wow, I never brought Mick Adamle and how he got the ref's name confused.

- 3 weeks until Judgment Day.

- Why does the WWE take the 'E' out of 'Judgement' anyway?

Still Flying By

Unlike my annual Hall of Fame and season bet posts, the 27th April one is the one I find quite difficult to write each year.

It's a bit hard not to remember the day you met someone. Well, for me it isn't hard because I recall it was the day before my Sister's birthday.

I can't believe it was five years ago. In fact - it was on a Sunday at around this time.

I didn't know back then that this person would soon become someone who I would love spending my time with. We spent hours together, I would often comment that whenever we spoke our conversations would go off in a tangent.

Every minute I spent in her company was sixty seconds of fun and happiness. That may sound soppy but it's the only way I can articulate what that time meant to me.

They really were good times.

But, we all know what they say about good things. A little over a year later we were so apart that it was killing me just to talk to her. I tried my best to prove what she meant to me and it didn't get across.

We didn't speak for years and then when we did speak it was just once every six weeks at least and that was even harder than those two plus years in which we didn't acknowledge the existence of each other.

There are two old mobile phones I have in my room that me and my Nephew were playing with a few years ago and I scrolled through them reading all the old texts. On one phone the text messages we had sent each other are nice, on the other phone they aren't so nice.

These two phones are symbolic of how the relationship degenerated.

And the thing that bothers me the most - as I write this - is I can't decide which phone hurt me the most.

PWI

I haven't read Pro Wrestling Illustrated since 1996 or 1997. I made the decision to buy the current issue because of who was on the cover.
Back when I was at school and doing a daily paper-round, I would spend all of my wages on anything to do with professional wrestling. The majority of my cash was spent on magazines.
The family of magazines printed by Pro Wrestling Illustrated would come out on a weekly basis. Every Sunday morning I would make the short walk up my road to the only shop in my area that sold magazines like Inside Wrestling, The Wrestler and Wrestling Superstars. The patriarch of this family of publications - Pro Wrestling Illustrated - was never available in this shop. I had to order it on special reserve at the WHSmith in town.
I religiously read all these issues as it was one of the only way I could educate myself on the sport back then. There was no Internet and the phonelines were even more of a rip-off as they are today.
One funny story I have of my experience reading these magazines was when I wrote a letter to them and it was printed. The only problem with this letter was I was billed from 'Cardiff, England.'
I eventually matured as a fan and realised that PWI and its other publications were worked. The stories were fictitious and the interviews were heavily kayfabed or made-up. The world of professional wrestling was changing and there was an explosion of magazines and newsletters that gave their readers the real stories about the business. I have said it before countless times but it is very true - the backstage politics and rivalries within wrestling are even more intriguing as what we see on the TV shows each and every week.
I had to find this information elsewhere.
I didn't plan on buying another issue of these magazines until I heard that the current issue has a celebration of Ric Flair's career with the top twenty-five covers he has appeared on. It was enough to put my hand in my pocket and shell out for one more issue.
I haven't bothered reading anything else in the issue but I noticed a few changes.
The paper is all glossy now. Back in the day they had a few glossy pages but the rest were in black-and-white.
I also notice the price has more than doubled - this issue came with a free issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated Presents Greats of the Game so I didn't feel that ripped off. In the 1990's the magazine cost me £2.25, nowadays it goes for £5.25.
I just hope the paperboys (and girls) of today are on a better wage than I was on.

Adamle's Second Week

I think my computer has a mind of its own.

I set my Windows Media Center to record ECW on Sky Sports last night and went to bed looking forward to seeing what would happen on this week's show.

If you recall, Mike Adamle took over the play-by-play commentator job and the episode that aired on Tuesday in the United States was his second time doing the job.

He was awful in week one. I wanted to watch the recent episode to see if he could top that.

I woke up and turned the monitor on intending to watch a bit before I went out this morning and the computer hadn't recorded it. I checked on my recording history and it read that 'the programme has already been recorded'.

The computer must have seen enough last week and had decided to spare me the pain of wasting sixty minutes of my time hearing ridiculous comments like 'Jamaican me crazy, Kofi' and everything else that prompted me to let out a giant sigh.

Well, that's my excuse why I didn't watch it.

In the USA, fifteen percent of last week's viewers didn't tune in either. I guess their TVR's were to blame as well. Either that or they know better.

Sarah Connor : Season Two

There was an announcement made yesterday by Fox Television in the United States that confirmed a second season of Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been commissioned and will air in the Autumn.

I have mentioned on here that I enjoyed the series. The final episode closed on a cliffhanger and I was hoping that a second series would be filmed.

I had heard a few weeks ago that there was no confirmation that the series would be renewed and that Fox has a tendency to scrap series' if the ratings aren't pulling in what they expect. This put a dampener on my hope at the time so the news I got yesterday was great.

All I have to hope for now is Virgin One get the broadcast rights for it in this country. If Sky One get it, the wait will be in vain.

Terry Scholes Associates

I have noticed that there have been a lot of fraudulent emails arriving in my junk folder on my Hotmail account. I thought it would be funny to reply to a few in the hope of luring the scammer into another one of my infamous wind-ups.

The current scam was from a man claiming to be 'Terry Scholes' who is representing the estate of the recently deceased Jurgen Krugger. Mr Krugger has left me some money in his will and Scholes has contacted me to break the news.

We're not talking pennies here, either. Jurgen, the man who I have never met in my life has left me fifteen million and one hundred thousand dollars. Not bad!

The problem is, I am cannot claim this money for reasons that will become clear. My solicitor, Mr Edward Muller had to break the news to him.

Dear Mr Scholes,
I am Edward Muller of Muller & Muller Solicitors and am accessing this email account on behalf of Mr David Taylor. Mr Taylor was unfortunately killed on the 6th of April under mysterious circumstances. Would it be possible for us to contact you to see if you can shed light on this matter? His family will be informed of this inheritance and we look forward to your hasty response.
Yours Sincerely,
Edward Muller
Muller & Muller

Mr Scholes responded to the email ignoring the fact that I had been killed 'under suspicious circumstances'. He sent a number of forms for me to fill in. My lawyer's partner had to read him the riot act.

My learned friend,
Did you read the email my associate sent you? We are working on behalf of the estate of David Taylor who has been killed under suspicious circumstances and have total access to all email correspondence and looking at possible clues towards his death. We implore you to send us more information regarding the dealings you have with Mr Taylor as well as evidence of a legal license. I do not know any legal firms based in The Strand and I certainly am not aware of a Terry Scholes Associates.
Are you new? If so, welcome to the brotherhood.
If you need any information regarding wotrking in the city then give me a call. Back to business, though.
We will require the information about your involvement with Mr Taylor as well as his last contact with you. He was found dead on the sixth of this month and to be perfectly honest with you it was very, very gruesome. A mafia kind of hit if you ask me, it is so suspicious that the MI5 and InterPol are working on it. It won't be long before they catch the people who did this - I hope!
We will contact you as soon as we are back in the office, we implore you to tell us as much as you can before M15 and InterPol seize the Internet from his family.
Yours Sincerely,
Edward Muller Jr.
Muller & Muller

The alleged Mr Scholes did not reply to this email. I sent a few more emails to him over the course of a week letting him know of the investigation going on and that the mafia, as well as the law, were now looking out for everyone who had been in contact with 'Mr Taylor' in his last days.

I sent him an email saying that his ignorance on the matter was a sure-fire sign that he was the murderer. It prompted him to reply saying he was not involved in any of the conspiracy. I ended the communication warning him that he had better hope the law got to him first.

He's probably walking around in fear of his safety and I don't really give a damn. I just hope that the time he wasted worrying about me saved a potential target a bit of money. There are quite a lot of people out there who fall for this kind of scam. Mr Scholes certainly fell for mine.

Champions' League Semi-Finals : Part I

The first legs of the Champions' League semi-finals take place tonight and tomorrow and I can't see many goals being scored in both of them.

Liverpool are at home to Chelsea in the first game of the week. The Reds have met The Blues a number of times in Europe and Liverpool have been the victors on the most recent occasions.

I can see a change in the script.

I believe Liverpool will win tonight's game 1-0. The second leg - with Chelsea at home - will see Liverpool lose the two ties on an aggregate of 2-1.

In the other match of this week, Barcelona will face Manchester United in Spain. I think this game will be a draw.

An away goal for Manchester United tonight will work in their favour as they prepare for the second leg at Old Trafford next week. I can see Man U winning at home but it will be difficult for them to take anything more than a draw at the Nou Camp.

Here are my predicted scores:

Liverpool 1 Chelsea 0
Barcelona 1 Man Utd 1

We'll see how close I was next week.

To Be King

There is only one person who I believe should be given the King of the Ring gimmick at Raw tonight.

Santino Marella!

Marella is the funniest character in wrestling right now and I think him being the King will enhance the comedic value in seeing him each week on Raw.

I know there are handfuls of performers who would benefit from becoming the King more than Santino. He has found his niche while there are other stars waiting to climb up the totem pole in the WWE. Nobody else would be a better arrogant king, though.

If it isn't Santino Marella the other two potential winners could be Umaga or Kennedy.

45-0-0

Well, Calzaghe did win this morning. I felt it was extremely close, though.

He was knocked down within the first minute and it looked ropey for the first few rounds. As I watched, these rounds were playing on my mind and I thought he was going to lose as the fight headed towards the twelfth round.

I breathed a sigh of relief when Michael Buffer announced that the third judge in the split decision had gone for Calzaghe.

It will be interesting to see what happens next. The current word going around is there will be a match against Roy Jones Jr.

I doubt the camp will be looking for part two of the Hopkins rivalry.

Calzaghe .V. Hopkins

I will be one of the many Brits staying up watching the fight in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

But, more than that, I will be one of the many Welsh fans cheering on Joe Calzaghe.

It should be a good fight as Bernard Hopkins is quite the opponent. His record stands at 48 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw and 1 no contest. Thirty-two of these wins were via knockout.

Calzaghe, on the other hand, has also won thirty-two fights by KO. His record stands at 44-0-0.

I can't see him losing tomorrow, either.

Uninstalled

I cleared my computer of most of the poker programs I had on it yesterday.

It had to be done - I was sitting there looking at the desktop and realised there were far too many programs that I haven't played on for months and knew I wouldn't need to log in to any of them within the immediate future.

I made sure I had recorded all my user-name and passwords in case I do decide to reinstall the software.

There were some programs I doubt I will ever return to, though.

The Four S's

I am looking at the current state of the Premier League and have noticed that there could potentially be a few managerial jobs lost during the end of the season.

I've decided to put each manager in one of four groups to show how I think their odds are of being in charge at the start of the 2008/9 season.

The bands are - Safe, Secure, Shaky and Sackable. A manager appearing in the 'safe' zone is guaranteed his job in the Summer, 'secure' is the group where I doubt there will be managerial changes, 'shaky' is the position where I believe there will be a change depending on how they finish in the season along with other forms of pressure, Sackable is the faction I think changes must occur.

SAFE
Alex Ferguson (Man Utd), David Moyes (Everton), Harry Redknapp (Portsmouth), Juande Ramos (Tottenham Hotspur)

SECURE
Arsene Wenger (Arsenal), Martin O'Neill (Aston Villa), Mark Hughes (Blackburn Rovers), Alan Curbishley (West Ham United), Kevin Keegan (Newcastle United), Alex McLeish (Birmingham City), Paul Jewell (Derby County), Roy Keane (Sunderland), Steve Bruce (Wigan Athletic)

SHAKY
Rafa Benitez (Liverpool), Sven-Goran Eriksson (Man City), Gareth Southgate (Middlesbrough), Steve Coppell (Reading), Gary Megson (Bolton Wanderers), Roy Hodgson (Fulham)

SACKABLE
Avram Grant (Chelsea)

Mike Adamle : The Ultimate Train Wreck

I was tempted to set my alarm clock for 3am last night when I heard the news that Mike Adamle had become the play-by-play commentator for ECW.

Joey Styles has been the voice for both incarnations of Extreme Championship Wrestling but he was removed from this post yesterday and Mike Adamle was moved in.

For those of you who do not know Mike Adamle, he is that guy who shows up now and again on Monday Night Raw and totally botches every segment he has been on.

He even referred to Jeff Hardy as 'Jeff Harvey' on his first night on the job during the Royal Rumble in January.

In recent weeks I noticed that Adamle was moved away from the live portion of the broadcasts and was seen in the backstage area doing interviews. I figured that these backstage skits were probably pretaped to avoid any live hiccups.

Adamle has experience in the field, though. He was the main host of American Gladiators for years. His awkwardness and ineptitude in covering wrestling has been unintentionally comical, however.

I woke up and the first thing I did was read reviews of last night's show.

I wasn't wrong.

It appears as though he made countless mistakes throughout the hour long episode. One reviewer even said it felt like watching two people on their first date as there was a lot of awkward silences between Adamle and Tazz, or 'The Tazz' as Adamle called him at the start of the show.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was another Vince McMahon trick of disturbing the legacy of ECW to the point where people's memories of the company will be the rubbish that the WWE has offered as extreme since they bought the rights to one of their 1990's rivals.

Return Of The King

The WWE will be bringing back the King of the Ring tournament at next week's Monday Night Raw.

The episode of Raw is a special three hour edition and will contain the entire tournament which will be the first time since 1995 that the company has held the tournament in one night.

The King of the Ring tournament started life on regular house shows in the late eighties but became a regular pay-per-view event in 1993. This continued until a number of years ago when the King of the Ring PPV was abolished.

The problem with the King of the Ring event was that in 1996 and beyond the company realised that it would be easier to have the first few rounds on television so they would have a match or two on each episode of their shows in the build-up to the event. They would then have the semi-final and final on the live pay-per-view broadcast and fill the rest of the card with regular matches.

I lost interest with the King of the Ring format once they stopped doing all the matches in one night so I am looking forward to see how it is done next week.

The last time the WWE brought back the tournament was on the Smackdown brand in 2006. The eventual winner - Booker T - became one of the top heels in the company but ended up leaving them in the latter part of 2007. He now wrestles for TNA.

A Pair Of Dix

The Sun website carries wrestling news so I usually go on there to see some of its content. I was on there on Saturday and noticed they had made a mistake with one of their articles.

The article involved the TNA owner -Dixie Carter - having attended a ROH (Ring of Honor) event on Friday night. She had apparently gone to the show on a mission to prove that a friendly competition exists between both companies.

This friendly rivalry wasn't what was wrong with the article (although I could argue that point but that's for another day). The problem with the article was the accompanying picture.

I had heard that Dixie Carter was a young, good looking lady. I hadn't seen many pictures of her before as her role is that as owner and nothing more. She is never seen on television.

A lot of people have gone on record to say how beautiful she was so I was a little shocked at the picture I saw on the website. It was of a lady who may look good for her age but she certainly doesn't look 'young'.

I realised immediately that The Sun must have went into their picture archives and picked up a picture of Dixie Carter the actress rather than Dixie Carter the daughter of one of the richest men in America.

I went onto the TNA website and found a picture of the Dixie in question and sent it on to the people at the newspaper. Within a few hours the article was corrected. I managed to save a copy of the original article and have placed both versions of the headline to show you the big mistake the website made.

Visitors

I had a visit from my Canadian relatives yesterday.

The last time I met them was in 2001 - it was a brief meeting then as I was on my way to work. This time I had a little bit more time with them.

The lady is my Father's second cousin and she and her Husband were staying in Cardiff for the weekend.

They both live in Calgary so they were impressed with my knowledge of professional wrestling, American football and the little I do know of ice hockey.

I asked who his favourite wrestler was and he told me he once liked Chris Benoit but his favourite nowadays is Shawn Michaels. I couldn't find fault with that answer. I guess a lot of Albertans had Benoit as their favourite before last Summer.

He was impressed when I showed him my pictures of when I met the WWF stars at their hotel in Cardiff at the age of fourteen years old.

They left to go out with my parents after an hour, it will probably be another six years before I see them again.

Derby To Win?

I have a dream!

I was looking through the football matches to be played this weekend and a game stood out to me.

Derby .vs. Aston Villa.

The Rams have only won one game at home this season and will be relegated at the end of May because they sit bottom of the division. So, in essence, they have nothing to play for.

I think this will be more of a reason to win, though.

The betting websites have Derby listed at around 5/1 to win this game. It does look like a hard task on paper, that's why the odds are stacked against them.

My predictor calculator also thinks this game will not be Derby's. It lists Villa as having a 57.3% chance of winning, Derby has 19.2% and the draw is listed at 23.5%.

The predictor has been wrong before, this could be one of those instances.

Evening Update - If you want to learn anything from this post it's best to see that stats never lie. Villa won 6-0!

Mario Kart Wii

The Wii version of the Mario Kart franchise came out in Europe this morning and I managed to get a copy of it.

I pre-ordered with Game and it arrived at my house yesterday afternoon following a lot of concern on my part as the game was shipped out on Sunday and I thought it had been lost in transit as I never had the delivery within the two days I was guaranteed.

It was well worth the wait.

I played on it for hours yesterday, my Nephew was here for the day so we both played against users from around the world.

The majority of players were Japanese but there were a few European players who must have also received their copy before the release day. The North American release is in another two weeks so it will be interesting how long it will be until I see American and Canadian racers.

I have already become addicted to it. We were playing before our dinner and I couldn't get off it. I kept turning to Josh and saying, 'one more race'. I would then start a new race and repeat this process.

I started realising how stupid my 'one last race' promise was after an hour of doing it and then prompted him with an order.

The next time I say, 'One last race' just turn the Wii off for me.

And he did.

The Historian Movie

I bought a book a while ago and have just learnt that the rights have been given to make a movie of it.

The Historian was written by Elizabeth Kostova and is a modern-day version of a Gothic horror novel. It's based on two generations of related people in search of the tomb of Vlad the Impaler.

The novel was well researched and, once I had finished reading, it got me looking at websites seeing how other readers had found the book.

There seems to be a mixture of feedback on it. I agreed with one view that The Historian tended to drag in places but, other than that, I thought it was really good and hard to put down near the end of it.

I feel this movie will have a difficult time following the structure of the novel, though.

The Historian is written in numerous styles. One of the main ways the author uses to convey the story is using letters that are read by the characters in another generation. This epistolary style of storytelling will be missing from the movie and I think people who liked this book will hate it. I can imagine the flow of the movie will be going back and forth throughout and it won't appeal to some.

Another great thing about the novel was the amount of research Elizabeth Kostova had put into it. I am not well-schooled in historical facts about Eastern European folklore but the way she introduced it in The Historian is enough to think she knows what she is on about. It was like reading factual tidbits of information in the context of a piece of fiction. She did a great job balancing it out.

It's because of these things that makes me concerned that the movie will not live up to the book. But then again - name me one movie that has?

Gloria Taylor

I was sorry to hear about the death of Gloria Taylor.

You may recall that in 2000, her young son - Damilola - was killed by a bunch of thugs as he walked home from a library in the area of Peckham where they lived.

The Damilola Taylor death was one of the first stories I wrote about in my portfolio for my University course so it always caught my attention whenever I would read or hear about it in the news.

It seemed that the killers wouldn't be punished for their crime but were sentenced in 2006 after numerous trials.

I'm glad for her that she got some kind of justice in her lifetime.

Pictures & Text

I am getting frustrated with the picture upload on this blog.

Whenever I place a picture onto the page, it always makes the paragraphs of my text close together.

I have tried numerous ways of remedying this but none seem to work. They always end up looking like yesterday's post.

It spoils it for me as I cannot make all the posts look the same. I liked what I wrote yesterday but the finished piece looks shoddy.

Mario Kart

Boxing Day 1992.
I'll never forget that day. It was when I bought Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo. This game became one of the most popular franchises on the Nintendo systems.
Two of my friends and myself met up early that morning to go into town to buy Super NES games with our Christmas money. Both of them had intentions to purchase Super Mario Kart but I didn't feel any inclination to buy it.
At first.
We walked into town and noticed one thing. Everywhere was closed! To show how much this country has changed, I am not so sure we will be met with such a ghost town in the year 2008.
We ended up leaving town and gambling on the Comet on the outskirts of the City Centre. Luckily for us, it was open.
They both picked up the boxes for the game they wanted and - as usual - I was in more than two minds what to buy.
I was an impulsive buyer back then, too. When I had the cash I wanted to spend it there and then but just couldn't decide what to buy. I eventually landed on the strip of thought Chris and Michael had been on at the start of the day and I picked up my copy of the game.
It was the best decision I made that day. It was a game that didn't lose its appeal as time went on. Sure, I haven't played that version of it in a long, long time but - as an owner of a Super Nintendo for years afterwards - that game was never far from the console.
As I type this, I am laughing. I just remembered something that happened to me a few days after buying the game.
I was doing a paper-round at the time and Chris and myself would go on each others rounds for company. After we finished his round, we went back to his house for a race on Mario Kart. I picked the mushroom character, Toad and he picked his. I don't remember who won but I do recall we had to finish off my round so we didn't stay long.
We left the house and headed towards the start of my route and I began feeling dizzy. My vision became blurred and all I could see was Toad moving left and right before me. It was one of the weirdest experiences ever. I ended up having to go back to his house and his Mother sent him to finish off my round while I had a lay down.
There was mass concern over Nintendo games causing epileptic fits at the time and it looked highly likely that I was going to be one of the statistics. I even threw up in my friend's bedroom before I got the chance of running to the toilet.
I was fine the next day and never faced anything like it again.
Mario Kart was later released on other Nintendo formats. I bought it for my Sister's Gameboy Advance in Christmas 2001 but I still prefer the SNES version.
It's hard to top the original isn't it? Only time will tell.

Bluebirds!

It will be amazing if Cardiff City win today and book their place in the FA Cup final in May.

Barnsley, in my opinion, were the weakest team left out of the final four. Sure, they beat Liverpool and Chelsea to make it this far but I just cannot see their luck taking them any further.

These may be famous last words on my part but I just have this feeling Barnsley's spectacular run in the cup is about to be derailed by the Bluebirds.

I'm talking a good game - let's hope I am right.

National Names

Here are two picks for the Grand National.

Hedgehunter 16/1
Madison De Berlais 50/1

I doubt I will have a bet on it this year but, if I were, these would be my each-way gambles.

Evening update - Good job I didn't bet! I was tempted, though.

My First Bet

I'll always remember the name of the first horse I ever picked for the Grand National.

I must have been seven years old and I was asked to pick out a name from the list of runners and the one that caught my eye was a nag called 'Big Brown Bear'.

It was obviously because it was a name that would appeal to a child, I know for sure it wasn't because I had been looking at the form.

I don't know where the horse finished in the race, all I remember is trying to listen out for his name by the commentators during the race. I didn't hear any acknowledgement that it was anywhere close to winning.

The following year, I was asked to make a pick again. Big Brown Bear was there on the list and I selected him for a second time.

Did it win?

Of course not.

Uneven Revenge

I still haven't been able to beat my Father at an elaborate April Fool's Day wind-up he did to me but I came close on Tuesday.

You may recall that my Dad did a cruel one to me when I was young and a big Grange Hill fan. I had entered a competition in the Radio Times to be an extra on the series and - a few days after posting off the entry - I received a phone call telling me I was going to be on Grange Hill and that they wanted to speak to my Father. I realised he was at the paper shop across the road from me and I ran out into the street yelling, 'Dad, Dad - I am going to be on Grange Hill!' The owner of the shop was waiting outside for me and told me he was on the phone.

And then it dawned on me what was going on.

Ever since that day, I have vowed to get even but the pranks I have tried on him pale in comparison.

This year's idea came to me on Monday night. My sister was staying over and she used his credit card to pay for a Dell laptop for her family. The thought bubble in my head resembled the mechanics of a watch as the plan came to me.

The following morning I rang my Father at work with some immediate news.

'Dad, Dell have just rang about that order last night and they wanted to know if we really wanted seven laptops.'

'What?' He replied.

I repeated the sentence and there was a pause.

'She must have pressed the button seven times,' I added.

'Did you tell them there was a mistake and we only want one?'

'Yeah, but they told me it's too late to change the payment now. They said they would send a cheque back within thirty days.'

I got him, it sounded too believable. His 'f***ing hell' was also too believable.

I then fessed up and he admitted that he fell for hook, line and sinker.

It was one of my best April Fool's pranks but it still doesn't top that Grange Hill one. One day I will match it!

The Send-Off

Monday night proved to me why I am a wrestling fan.

For years, I have often wondered why I continue to tune in to the televisions shows, read the books, newsletters & magazines, buy DVDs and everything else. I never could find the right answer.

I could easily say 'I love wrestling,' but that's a cop-out without fully answering the question.

If you haven't seen that episode of Raw this week, you need to seek it out. It includes the most classy thing the company has ever done.

The show was centred on Ric Flair giving his farewell speech. He came out near the end of the show thanking the fans for their support over his career and told them not to be sad. He finished up his speech and was then interrupted by Triple H. They shared an embrace in the ring and then Hunter brought out a list of people from Ric's past.

Arn Anderson, JJ Dillon, Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard, Ricky Steamboat, Batista, Harley Race and Shawn Michaels were just some of the names that were introduced to the crowd.

Flair's children and wife also came out, this was then followed by the entire crew of people working for the WWE.

It was such a touching way to say goodbye to the Nature Boy.

The next time I ask myself why I am a fan of pro wrestling all I will need to do is turn this episode on again.

Thank you, Ric.

Celebrating Fools

A few months ago, I was doing well at fantasy football and my main rival was subjected to me creating a 'Fantasy Football for Dummies' book with his head put on the cartoon on the cover. Well, I was a fool - things turned around for him and I have had to deal with his backlash. He has created a plethora of book covers of his own and has constantly sent them to my email account asking for me to post them here.
I told him I would do it as soon as my WrestleMania coverage ended which ironically lands on April Fools Day. So, let's all enjoy this fool's work.
All I can think of is the saying, 'imitation is the sincerest form of flattery'.
And I am very flattered.
