Talking About Walkie-Talkies

I was looking through the Black Friday (It's not Black Friday YET!) sale pages on the Smyths Toys website earlier this morning and came across a walkie-talkie set.

It made me remember my childhood experiences with those devices.

I cannot recall how many walkie-talkies I was given in my early years. Nostalgia has tricked me into thinking they were perfect. Were they, though? I recall many times being out of range unable to speak with my friend who had turned around the corner from my home as we played with them,

There was a boy in my class who brought his set into school once and his picked up radio! I always remember thinking I wanted a strong set like his.

And then there would be movies. You'd see kids chatting to their friends. Those buddies weren't in the next room, though. They were in different homes!

Was it just Hollywood tricking me?

By the time I reached my teens, I had expanded into CB Radio. And maybe more. So, you could say I ended up getting my wish of better signals.

As an adult, I once again played with children's walkie-talkies. My youngest nephew had a pair of Thomas the Tank Engine devices, made to resemble mobile phones, during one of his earlier Christmases. I cannot recall noticing much of a different between my days and his.

Now - all these years later - and seeing the walkie-talkies of today, I find myself wondering if they're just like they used to be. Has technology improved them in any way?

They must surely be better nowadays. Right?

Those shall remain unanswered questions. There is no way I'm going to buy a pair of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles walkie-talkies to test them out.

Or am I?
