I wrote the post below on Monday afternoon. This was shortly after I heard the news of Sven Goran-Eriksson's death. Later that day, I found out about Sid Vicious' passing. I'll write about Sid in tomorrow's post. Boy, do I have a lot to write.
I suppose the first time I ever heard of Sven was back when he was managing teams in Italy. And then - a few years after that - he became England manager.
He has the distinction of being the first foreign boss of the England side.
When the news broke on Monday, the press stated he was in charge of the team during the 'Golden Era' which, in my opinion, is not what it was. 'Gold' represents a win. The team of 1966 is the only 'Golden Era'.
With that said, the England sides Sven Goran-Eriksson played were like a who's who of English football history. Especially for the modern day.
If I recall correctly, Sven was the first manager to give David Beckham the captain's armband for his country. I was on a train heading from Bromsgrove listening to TalkSport when that news came out.
That's not the only Sven Goran-Eriksson and TalkSport memory I have.
I suppose it was possibly 2002 or so. I won a prize on one of the shows on the station. I was sent a bunch of gifts and one of them was a copy of Bell and Spurling's Sven, Sven, Sven song which came out in time for the Japan and South Korea World Cup.
A documentary about Sven came out on Amazon Prime Video a few days ago. That reminded me in a way of John Madden who also had a documentary about him released shortly before he left us.
