Eating Popeyes (For The Very First Time)

I secured a personal goal yesterday.

Upon finding out that a Popeyes franchise was opening up in my city, I made it a mission to finally try biscuits and gravy.

The fried chicken fast food restaurant, which was founded in Louisiana in the early 1970's, opened one of its stores here in Cardiff earlier this year.

I have been aware of Popeyes for quite some time. That's mainly down to seeing commercials for the restaurant on some of the American things I watch.

I was all clued in on what 'biscuits and gravy' consisted of by someone I used to chat with online. This would have been in the mid-to-late 2000s when Jesse and Featus - to cut a long story: a former tag team in WWE - had a theme song titled 'Biscuits and Gravy'.

It wasn't just those two items I ordered on the day.

Popeyes Meal

As you can see, I also bought a Popeyes Deluxe Chicken Sandwich and fries.

The brioche sandwich (or what I'd rather call it: a chicken burger) was very nice. The coating of the chicken breast was something I haven't tasted before. It was close to as good as the exterior of the chicken found at KFC. I'd have to say the texture felt a lot stronger than KFC.

Along with the chicken, inside the burger sandwich came a slice of cheddar cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise and pickles.

The sandwich was packed, very filling and enjoyable.

The fries were okay. By the time I was able to open them, they were lukewarm, but that's on me not them. If I were to explain them, I'd say they tasted slightly more premium than the southern fries you'd likely find in supermarkets.

As for my personal main event: I guess the biscuit did indeed taste like what I expected. I thought it would be like eating a scone and that's exactly how it turned out. I suppose its outside was baked better than scones I am used to.

Popeyes' Biscuit and Gravy

The gravy is called 'cajun gravy', so I had trepidations when it came to dipping the biscuit into it because I am not keen on spicy food at all (that's why I opted for Popeyes Deluxe Chicken Sandwich and not the 'Spicy Deluxe Chicken Sandwich'). After dipping the biscuit in a few times, I felt that it wasn't as spicy as I had anticipated. That's a positive for me, it might not be for others.

After finishing off both the burger and biscuit, I poured the remaining gravy over the remaining fries. It was at this point when I noticed a slight tinge of spice, but it was very weak.

All in all, I am happy to have finally tried these foods. I will try this chain again. And when I do, I will pick a different meal to go with my biscuits and gravy.

I might even go for the biscuit with honey instead of gravy.

With that said, KFC is still number one and I cannot envision Popeyes ever toppling it even though I found this eating experience enjoyable.
