Kenny Omega has become IWGP Heavyweight Champion after defeating Kazuchka Okada in the main event of today's NJPW Dominion show.
The match was contested under best-of-two falls rules. The winner won with a score of 2-1.
The victory ends what, in my opinion, is the greatest title reign that I've witnessed in the thirty-plus years I've watched professional wrestling.
Okada's two-year reign was so much fun to follow.
As I sit here, I can think of two world title reigns coming to an end that made me feel - for want of a better word - gutted.
The first is Diesel's WWF Championship reign ending after a year. I don't really know why I cared so much about the loss. I guess I thought it was fun seeing the reign last as long as it did.
The other was from years earlier when Hulk Hogan dropped the very same WWF Title to the Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VI.
I am an older and wiser fan now. It's a different feeling watching Okada's reign coming to an end. It feels surreal, but I know it's only business.
I've spent the majority of this post talking about how sorry I am to see Okada's most recent run as champion conclude. The thing is.. I am doing so with the anticipation that Omega's reign will be just as cool to sit back and watch!
