Yesterday's NFL game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons was one I spotlight long before the 2026 regular season schedules were revealed in May.
I wrote about why the NFC South clash had more to it than a regular division battle in Taylor's Pro Football Gambling Annual. Here's an excerpt:
I noted Mayfield's TAFKA Twitter post in January and made sure to remind myself of it once I knew when the Bucs and Falcons would have their first game of the 2026 season.
Tampa Bay were classed as -2.5 favourites in their rainy home ground. They shutout their opponents with a score of 16-0.
How Baker Mayfield played against the Falcons
I had built it all up as Mayfield intending to show up his former head coach - Kevin Stefanski - but didn't play out that way.
Even though he was the main at the helm for the Bucs offense, Mayfield offered zero to the passing game.
And when I write 'zero', I am not doing so figuratively. From three passing attempts, NONE were completed.
Tampa Bay became the first time since 1974 to win a game without a single completion. Before yesterday, the honour went to the Buffalo Bills and their then-quarterback, Joe Ferguson, who failed to execute two completions in a 16-12 victory over the New York Jets.
The next Bucs-Falcons game will be indoors
Mayfield beat his former head coach with little effort in rainy Tampa. The circumstances are sure to contrast - in Week 16 - when the Falcons host inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
