The First Picture Of Patrick Stewart

The outpouring of appreciation of Patrick Stewart, following his passing, has been incredible.

It seems that everyone on my TAFKA Twitter timeline has had something to say about the late actor. All positive, I should add!

A genuinely cool amount of stories have been shared.

Unfortunately, my tribute to Patrick Stewart would be kind of crappy compared with the rest.

I wasn't much of a Star Trek fan. However, I can recall the first time I came across Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Video Shop Poster

It must have been in the late-80s. A video shop down the road from me was renting out a cassette of, I surmise, the pilot episode of The Next Generation. The poster of the 'movie' was in the front window. I was stunned because it was an entirely new crew of the Starship Enterprise. I hadn't been aware of a new Star Trek movie (I had gone to see Star Trek IV a year or so previous, so I wasn't completely out of the loop when it came to Star Trek films). I eventually worked out it was a new series.

I searched for the poster before writing this. I came across one on eBay. There's a 99% chance this is what it looked like. It definitely used this exact shot of the new crew.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

So, yes - it was that poster which introduced me to Patrick Stewart. I've often reminded myself of that fact whenever I've seen him play Jean-Luc Picard, Professor X and others.

As I am typing in free flow, my brain is also reminding me he was Claudius in a Hamlet performance we watched during our A Level English classes back then.

He was a modern day classic.
