Beyond The Praise

The Indianapolis Colts will travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens in a wild card post-season game tonight.

The game is going to be interesting for many reasons. The main being this could be Ray Lewis' last home game.

Lewis has spent his entire career playing for the Ravens after being drafted by the team in 1996. In this time he has won thirteen trips to the Pro Bowl, numerous player of the year awards and - most prominently - a Super Bowl ring.

So, as you would expect, his pending retirement has been the talk of the media all week.

The problem I have with some of these stories is the on-field accomplishments and hero worship overlooks two murders that took place in 2000.

Lewis, along with two friends, were indicted on murder charges following a double stabbing. His lawyer managed to get his charges dropped after entering a plea bargain. He ended up testifying against the two people he was arrested with. It should also be noted that the white suit he was wearing on that day has not been found.

Whenever I've read stories about how such a great person and player he is, all I think about is this one part of his life that does seem to be pushed into the background whenever the praise is being dished out.

If you're going to write a career perspective of this man, what happened on January 21st 2000 should never be glossed over or not part of his story.

Just sayin'.
