25 Years Ago Today

I've been surfing the Internet for the past hour or so and came across something that made me think 'wow, it feels like only yesterday'.

It's the twenty-fifth anniversary of the angle that WWE did on board the USS Intrepid which turned Lex Luger into the company's top babyface.

Or rather tried to.

The Stars and Stripes Challenge was an event where wrestlers and stars from other sports attempted to bodyslan WWF Champion - Yokozuna.

All failed until a helicopter came along with the final participant inside.

Luger had joined the WWF earlier in the year and was a heel. He came along on July 4th 1993 decked out in a stars and stripes shirt and did what all the other athletes couldn't do.

This would lead to Luger travelling the USA on board a bus named The Lex Express as he prepared to challenge Yokozuna for the championship at SummerSlam 1993.

It was the WWF's attempt to turn Luger into the next Hulk Hogan.

SummerSlam turned into quite a letdown, however. Luger won the match, but only by count-out. Meaning he didn't win the championship.

I could go on, but let's just say Luger never ended up winning the big one and left the company to return to WCW two years later.
