I have been intrigued by the new menu available from McDonald's. For the past week or so, I've seen the fast food chain promote its ''Secret Menu' with some madcap burgers and drinks combos.
The burgers of note are 'Chicken Cheeseburger' and a Surf N Turf'. The former consists of a beef patty paired up with a coated chicken patty along with a slice of cheese, onions, pickles, mustard and tomato ketchup (you know, what you'd usually get in a cheeseburger!).
As for the Surf N Turf - well, you get the beef patty and a white pollock fish patty (like you'd get in a McDonald's Filet-O-Fish). As well as those two items you'll find the same addons I mentioned above.
The plan for today's post was to flip a coin and choose which one of those burgers I'd have for lunch today. I've decided to scrap that idea. I'm simply going with the burger I believe sounds the most appealing of the two.
I'm going to Surf N Turf it!
By the way, I'm also going to buy an espresso milkshake with this order. That's another special that is part of the 'Secret Menu' range. Customers who order this drink receive a vanilla milkshake and a shot of espresso as a mixer.
Friends of mine will think I've gone crazy ordering coffee. I never drink the stuff, but think it's worth having a go.
I'm about to place my order. My post-lunch report will be found immediately below.

Okay, it's a little over an hour after I wrote the intro this post. The order arrived on time. Here's how the Surf 'N Turf burger looked upon opening it.
I misread the details about this burger and didn't relay it in the section above. I won't edit it because it'll make for a nice surprise if you've travelled this far into the post.
When I wrote that the Surf 'N Turf contained one beef patty and one of the patties found inside a filet-o-fish, I was mistaken. There are actually two beef patties along with one fish patty.
The photo immediately above was taken after a couple of bites. I enjoyed the burger. However, I felt the beef and the other items like the cheese, gherkin and the condiments overthrew the fish when it came to taste. That was the negative.
I cannot see how it could be improved other than to run with a bit of tartare sauce on top of the fish patty to try and counter the other parts of the burger. That could be a bit of a gamble, however.
As random as this might come across - the bun tasted more fluffy and fuller than I've ever experienced before. You can actually see a bit for yourself in the first photograph. I was quite impressed with that. Yes, as I've noted, a very random observation considering I came for the surf and the turf. Not what it was being housed in.
Now, onto the other item I mentioned.
I liked the idea of having an espresso to pour into a vanilla milkshake. With that said, it made a bit of a mess initially because the milkshake was filled to its brim. I should never complain about getting more than, or exactly, what I ordered. So, I won't. I should have been a bit sensible by taking a couple of sips of milkshake before pouring in the espresso.
Mess aside, I enjoyed the mixture. Trust me, that's praise considering how much I dislike coffee. It would never become my go to milkshake from McDonald's even though vanilla is one of my top two milkshake flavours.
I doubt I'd ever go out of my way to have a McDonald's Surf 'N Turf burger again. I've been there, done that. As for the espresso milkshake - well, I might do. At a push. A very strong push.
