I have just been made aware of a new telephone scam which involves the criminals pretending to be East Midlands Railway,
I was made aware of it because.. I received the call myself!
Upon answering the call, the receiver is met with an automated voice thanking them for buying a ticket from East Midlands Railway and then named the price of the fare (I think they said £140). The next step in the con was to say something along the lines of 'if you did not make this transaction please press 1'.
It was at that point I cut the call.
It's the first time I've ever been a potential mark for a scam where the fraudsters claim to be from a railway company.
I suppose people in the Midlands may have been targeted long before now and I've only became aware of it because the scammers called because they happen to have reached my neck of the woods which is quite a while away from the Midlands.
