First Thoughts After Watching The Force Awakens

I finally got to watch Star Wars Episode VII yesterday.

I might have to watch it a few more times, but - as of right now - it's my fourth favourite out of the seven installments. It's superior to the three prequels yet does not top the originals.

For those of you interested, here's the list from worst to first.

7) The Phantom Menace
6) Attack of the Clones
5) Revenge of the Sith
4) The Force Awakens
3) Return of the Jedi
2) A New Hope
1) The Empire Strikes Back

This isn't a definitive list just yet. I have to give The Force Awakens a few more viewings before I decide whether it's better than Return of the Jedi.

What made it so good was seeing some of my favourite characters again. I last saw Leia, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker back when I was a child so it was cool to see them back in a Star Wars movie.

It was also good to see how they introduced the new characters. After all, they are the new players in the latest trilogy and possibly beyond.

I had spent months avoiding spoilers. I think I did an adequate job. There was one huge spoiler that I came across twice, but I sort of figured that's what was going to happen. If you don't want to read anything that may spoil it for you I'd quit now...

... I was aware that Harrison Ford wanted Han Solo to be killed off in Return of the Jedi. As soon as he was announced as being in the movie, I had a feeling he was coming back to bookend his character. It was only a few weeks ago when my suspicions were confirmed. I saw a YouTube video pop up on my recommended playlist from the Jimmy Kimmel show titled 'They finally killed Han Solo' (or something along those lines). I X'd the video from the list, but the title was enough to confirm everything. I can't really call it a 'spoiler' as I had predicted he would die all along.

I also guessed Princess Leia, or General Organa, would end up dead. I was wrong on that one!

Most of the movie is about the search for Luke Skywalker. He shows up in the closing scene. So, it's safe to surmise that he'll be a bigger deal in the next movie at least.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'll watch a few more times and see if it ends up moving Return of the Jedi down the list.
