Eating European Humble Pie

It's looking like I'll have to cheer on Spain tonight.

With both Argentina and Brazil out of the World Cup, I decided I would like to see Uruguay win it.

Well, they disobliged last night by losing to Holland.

I'm certainly eating humble pie because - in the months leading up to the tournament - I discounted any European team's chance of success because of the trend that teams from the same continent have won the Cup.

The only exception to this rule are Brazil.

Go look at every other World Cup venue and winner and you'll notice the pattern, too.

Earflier this week, my friend told me that my anti-Europe theory was looking flimsy. I got into defence mode and exclaimed 'Hey, I still have a 25% chance!'

And then Uruguay lost.

I have respected Spain for a few years but I've been even more harsh on their chances of success this year.

My best friend is half-Spanish and I have ribbed him good and proper for the past few months. Every time he would argue for Spain, I'd let him know how succesful my theory was.

Just the other day, I ribbed him over it.

I bought him a Spain cap and hid it inside my coat when I was about to give it to him. I then put a Brazil cap I had also bought and put it inside a bag. I handed it over to him and said 'I've got you something'. He pulled the cap out and the look on his face was legendary. 'It's so you can support a proper team' I added.

He called me a 'cheeky twat' before I let him in on my deception.

He's laughing more now.

A European team will win the World Cup. There's no doubt about it now. I have no incetive to root for any team now that my favourites have been eliminated so I am going to pick Spain as my friend will profit from it.

Had I decided to bet on Argentina or Brazil in single bets, I would have ended up hoping for a Spain win, anyway.

Stan James - as I think I have written on this blog a while ago - are refunding all losing World Cup bets if Spain go on to win.

I would have needed them to win so I could get my stake back.

  2. Well well Mr Equinoxx what can I say? Theories are there to broken....
well that is my theory anyway ;) but lets hope that the 'lucky' Spanish
cap you bought keeps on bringing that luck, as the cap hasn't moved from
it's current location since Spain started to win. Slightly superstitious
I know, but I will not be chalking my hand ;)

The dream is still alive and lets both hope the dream continues after
tonight's game. Spain may not win the World Cup or even get to the
final, but they have gone further than Brazil for once and on that note
I will leave you with one of your famous quotes I have heard for many a
    year....

'I hate to say I told you so but....'

I always waited years to say that!!
