Carlito's Way, the film starring Al Pacino and Sean Penn is one of my favourite movies. In 2005, I read that the prequel to it was being made without the two actors and I vowed never to watch it.
Until I got it for my birthday.
The book, Carlito's Way, was the first of two novels about Carlito Brigante a Puerto-Rican gangster. The Pacino film was titled Carlito's Way but is really the screenplay of the second book After Hours. As there was already a movie named After Hours, the producers decided to call the 1993 film by the title of the original book.
Got it? Well, the prequel - as it couldn't be called Carlito's Way II was named Carlito's Way : Rise To Power.
I really thought I was going to hate this film but I walked away from it surprised that I hadn't given it a chance sooner.
I don't really want to write about the entire story but it involves Carlito teaming up with a Black and an Italian to run a drug ring. The fact that these three races can co-exist and become associates and friends in the drug trade is one of the key themes to the movie.
The main question about the film now is - could I watch this one and then watch the Pacino classic?
That is a really hard question because there are at least two actors from Carlito's Way in Rise To Power and they play different characters in each. In fact, Luis Guzman is one of the main characters in both films and it would be difficult to watch them back-to-back.
With all that said, I would recommend the movie to Carlito's Way fans even if it is to get a back story to the first movie.
