I was scrolling through the cable channels on New Year's Day and stumbled upon the film entitled Small Soldiers. I hadn't seen it before and it reminded me in a lot of ways to one of my favourite films as a child.
The movie in question is Gremlins.
My parents absolutely hated this film. They were never keen on letting me watch it but they surrendered when I pleaded with them that everyone else at school had seen it. I wasn't lying - Gremlins was the fifteen-rated film that was like a badge of honour. If you hadn't seen it then you were a nobody.
I haven't seen the movie in years so I don't really know how it holds up today. Bear in mind that this film was released in 1984 before computer animation became a big part of cinema.
I wasn't a fan of Gremlins 2 which came out six years later. A third installment would be interesting, though. Times have changed and I think they could make good use of modern day technology and scare a new generation of six year olds.
In the meantime - I think I should seek out my VHS cassette of the original.
