There was an article in tonight's South Wales Echo looking back at one of Cardiff's most famous boxers.
Steve Robinson, as this interview states, is the modern day Rocky Balboa. His story is just as incredible as the Hollywood movies.
In 1993, Stevo returned home from work and was phoned by his trainer to give him news that he had been given a title shot. The problem with the fight was that he had two days to prepare and this meant he had to lose six pounds of weight to be in contention.
He went on with the bout and became WBO featherweight champion.
The Welsh hero's career soared over the next two years as he overcame challenger upon challenger until he met Prince Naseem Hamed in Cardiff Rugby Club in the Autumn of 1995.
I recall reading interviews with Hamed after this fight and the boxer claimed that the Cardiff crowd was the most hostile he had fought in front of.
Despite this vociferous environment, Hamed beat the Cardiffian.
I see Steve quite often when I am walking to work. It reminds in so many ways of the Rocky series as both fighters remained close to their roots despite their overnight successes.
