Last night, the NFL Fantasy league I am a member of hosted its online draft.
What a pain that turned out to be.
It was scheduled for 8:30PM, but the entire NFL Fantasy website crashed. Or something. That resulted in the draft postponed until 10PM.
At the time, I was watching WWE Clash in Paris, so the draft started right when the main event was about to begin.
Anyway, as I've done over the past few years - I went in with no clear gameplan. Well, I had ONE goal and I'll get to that shortly.
Despite all the trouble with the delay, the NFL Fantasy gods gifted me the first overall pick. So, I went with the top player on the list - Cincinnati's wide receiver, Ja'Marr Chase.
I then spent the next few rounds picking up the top player at each point. Until, I made the move I have been plotting since late last year.
Kinda.
You see, a few weeks ago, I was looking through messages I shared with Vicki on TAFKA Twitter. This one from December 28th came up:
Well, I didn't remember. Not until the other week, when I was looking through those messages. I made it a point to wait until the time was right to select the Los Angeles Chargers' quarterback - Justin Herbert. I pulled it off. I did so earlier than I should have, but I wanted to make sure I kept that target.
Funnily enough, I mentioned the plan to one of Vicki's friends in a chatroom a week ago. I said something along the lines of 'I have an idea which quarterback I'd like' and he, seeing as he's from Michigan, asked 'Jared Goff?'
Well - later in the draft - when it was time to choose a backup, I noticed Goff was still available. I thought to myself 'Vick would find it funny if I selected Jared Goff here because of what Ros said.' So, I selected the Lions' QB.
Here are all of my selections. When looking for a defence, the Cleveland Browns sat at the top of the board when it was my time to pick. I was counted down and made a panic move by choosing their defence. I shall stick with my selection, however. For now.
As usual, I waited for the NFL Fantasy email to grade how I performed. I was given a B -. I'll take that. It's the best result I've had in a while following
a C in 2024 and
C+ a year before that.
The website pointed out my Herbert pick was ballsy noting 'Taking Justin Herbert with the 80th overall pick was a stretch. His ADP (Average Draft Position) was 124.9 across the NFL.com leagues'
Each year, I always make a point of trying to do better than the computer's projected record. As you can see, it suspects I'll have a losing record with 7-8. Therefore, the goal is to go at least 8-7!
