Revisiting The King Of The Road Match

Dustin Rhodes has recently drawn attention to one of his most infamous matches from over thirty years ago.

In a post on TAFKA Twitter, Rhodes showed a couple of pictures of the King of the Road match he had with Blacktop Bully at WCW Uncensored 1995. The bout was held in the back of a truck and the aim was to fight your way to the front to sound the horn.

It became quite a controversial match because both wrestlers secretly bladed themselves to cause blood. That was against WCW/Turner Sports' policy back then, so most of the match had to be cut out (it was aired 'live' but had been filmed previous to the PPV).

Anyway, the two wrestlers found themselves fired from WCW following the event.

This was in the spring of 1995. A few months later, Dustin Rhodes would find his way to back to the WWF this time under the Goldust character which has turned out to be one of his most successful gimmicks during his numerous spells in WWE.

Rhodes returned to the topic last night stating 'I thought for yrs (sic) everyone thought this was one of the worst matches ever'.

It kind of is, to be fair. But, let's not ignore its place in wrestling history.

Had that match not happened, Rhodes may have stayed with WCW and Goldust may have never been created.

It's one of those sliding doors moments in wrestling. At a push.
