The game show Password has returned to the UK.
Originally created in the USA, by legendary game show producer - Bob Stewart, the game show has had numerous revivals over here in the UK since the 1960s.
To get to the point - the gist of the game goes like this: two teams of two compete against one another to work out a secret word in each round. One of the players on each team is aware of the word and must give their teammate a one-word clue to try and see if they guess correctly. Each team alternates until the password is guessed correctly. Unless, of course, the team which goes first gets the word right in their initial guess of the round.
Another important thing about the teams is they're made up of one celebrity and a civilian contestant.
The current relaunch - on ITV - is presented by Stephen Mangan. If my calculations are correct - he'll be the eighth host out of all the reboots the series has had in its UK existences.
For what it's worth, I think Mangan is a perfect fit to host this. It's the other additions I question.
I watched the first episode when it aired last Saturday and the celebrity team captains were Daisy May Cooper and Alan Carr. It appears, from the commercial for tonight, that they’re regular team captains.
In old US versions, I noticed they would bring in different celebs to team up with the contestants.
I don't like the idea of permanent team captains because I think it would feel fresh if other celebs had a chance of participating. But, that's my only critique so far. I could end up liking this way of doing it.
Considering the game was last made on these shores in the late-80s, I am intrigued to see whether it becomes popular an finds itself as a regular fixture in this country.
I've already set the cable box to record each new episode. I'll absolutely be watching them.
Earlier this year, ITV relaunched Jeopardy! for a twenty-episode run. I am happy to see that the Stephen Fry helmed show will return for a second season.
