The A Block for this year's NJPW G1 Climax was settled within the last hour. I was quite happy with how it played out.
In a post published a day before the gruelling round-robin tournament began, I pointed out that Shingo Takagi was my pick to be the overall winner come August 18th.
Takagi entered today's match against EVIL on eight points. His opponent was on ten. It was a case of, if EVIL won, he would enter the playoff portion of the tourney.
A Takagi win would have placed Takagi into the knock-out stages.
All this is because Zack Sabre Jr. - in the previous contest - scored a win over SANADA to go to 14 points to take the block and, as a result, earn a bye into the semi-final for A Block.
Anyway - back to Takagi .vs. EVIL - the result came in for Takagi. He won his place into the playoffs and he will now meet the Great-O-Khan who scored an upset, of sorts, against IWGP Heavyweight Champion - Tetsuya Naito - in today's finale.
The main event result left both Great-O-Khan and Naito on ten points to close out the round-robin portion of the tourney. However, the G-O-K qualified because he had the tiebreaker win over Naito.
You need both a good memory and a calculator to keep track of tiebreakers in this thing. A simple spreadsheet, like the one I have used to keep score, won't do completely because of the aforementioned tiebreakers.
The B Block playoff picture will be settled on Wednesday following that group's final round-robin bouts.
