Neighbours Loses At Daytime Emmys

Neighbours came away from the 51st Daytime Emmy Awards with nothing from the Australian soap's two nominations.

At last night's ceremony, the weekday show - which relaunched last year after a brief hiatus - was nominated for 'Outstanding Drama Series' while Guy Pearce, who had reprised his role as Mike Young for Neighbours' seemingly final episodes as well as some of its 'rebirth' instalments, was up for 'Outstanding Guest Performer'.

The actual winners turned out to be ABC's General Hospital and Dick Van Dyke respectively.

51st Daytime Emmy Awards

Back in April, when I first learnt of the nominations, I wrote that Pearce was deserving of an Emmy for his comeback but noted Van Dyke's 'name value, as well as his age, should likely make him the favourite'.

Well - nearly every article I've read this morning has trumpeted the fact that Van Dyke's win in the category was historic because he became the oldest winner of a Daytime Emmy Award at the age of ninety-eight.

Van Dyke had been nominated for his appearance on Days of our Lives.

Better luck next time, Neighbours.
