English Canon

I had a few thoughts after watching England's 1-0 win over Serbia yesterday.

The biggest one I could think of was how the media is once again talking about turning around the 'X years of hurt'.

They're, of course, talking about how many years it has been since the Three Lions last won a major tournament. As of this morning, it's fifty-eight years.

Or is it?

Remember a couple of years ago, when the Ladies' England team won their version of the Euros and almost everyone plauded the victory as finally exorcising those years of hurt?

Well, not any more.

It now appears - if we're to go by how the narrative went last night - that the ladies' win is no longer canon. And I'm happy about that.

Let their win be THEIR win.

By doing that, let the England men's team of 1966 have the recognition as being the last English squad to win a cup in THEIR tournaments.
