When I heard that Marvel Comics were ending the run of The Amazing Spider-Man with its seven hundredth issue, I had to buy it for old times sake.
It was the first time in nearly twenty years since I had last bought a comic book. Spider-Man has always been my favourite superhero, and The Amazing Spider-Man had always been my favourite title so there was no way I was not going to seek out the final issue.
And what an issue it was.
To cut a long story short - Peter Parker dies in the end.
His death wasn't in vain, though. He managed to pass his goodness into his nemesis, Doctor Octopus (who had changed bodies with Parker and was masquerading as Spider-Man).
It ended with Doc Ock proclaiming that he was going to be good from now on and was going to be a Superior Spider-Man.
And, as luck would have it, Marvel are bringing out a new title, Superior Spider-Man, in a few weeks.
As I was reading the comic, all I could think of was 'this is going to annoy a lot of people'. As soon as I finished, I checked the Internet and I was proved right.
I haven't been a good fan to Spidey in twenty years so it's not my place to say whether it was a good or bad way to handle the character.
What I will say is I didn't care too much for it. However, it is intriguing to see how the story develops in the new comic book.
Looks like I've just talked myself into buying issue one of Superior Spider-Man now.
