On The Piste

I ended up watching some of the Olympic fencing last night. It seems I picked the most newsworthy match to watch.

It was the semi-finals and a German lady was going up against a South Korean. It was tied in the last second although the Korean - Shin Lam - had the advantage somehow (I don't understand the rules). Her opponent, Britta Heidemann ended up winning following three restarts within the final second. The South Korean coach was going ballistic at the result, and rightfully so.

There was definitely something up with the timekeeping.

Lam refused to leave the piste following the call because it would mean she accepted the verdict.

She was there for almost an hour and a half as her coach wrote a letter of appeal to the higher-ups. The appeal was read but the original ruling was upheld. Lam was then escorted from the piste.

I'm typing this up at 8.19pm on Monday night. Lam has returned to the piste for the bronze medal play-off and she is currently 3-1 up against her Chinese opponent.

I'm hoping she wins this game because she was robbed earlier.

She has definitely become the crowd favourite after everything that has happened this evening.

She lost 15-11/ Such a shame.
