I was bored last night.
So bored that I decided to watch Police Academy 5 : Assignment Miami Beach.
And it brought back a particular memory.
Back when I was in junior school, I was a Police Academy fan. You may recall, I wrote about my love of the movies when I bought the Police Academy DVD box-set around this time last year.
Back in 1989, my relatives were visiting from the American air force base they were stationed at in Germany and - as if it were yesterday - I can remember the night before and the morning that they went back to their home.
I was in a sleeping bag on the floor of my bedroom, my older cousin was beside me in his sleeping bag and his older brother was asleep in my bed. We were talking and I remember asking him if he liked the Police Academy films. He told me that he did and that he had seen Police Academy 5 and told me about it.
I didn't believe him.
He was telling me about the scene where Tackleberry put a gun to a sharks face and told it to leave the swimming area of the beach and I thought my cousin was pulling my leg. I played along with it and the conversation continued on to other things before we both fell asleep.
The following morning, my family and I waved them off and I walked back into the living room and right there on the television screen was a trailer for Police Academy 5.
I couldn't believe the coincidence.
I was watching the extras on the DVD last night and saw the trailer again and this memory flooded back to me.
As for the film itself - my love of this series of films ended around the time this one was released.
Things went downhill after the fourth film. That's why it has taken about a year to get to number five. I still have another two to watch and I cannot see myself putting them into my DVD player in the immediate future.
