A Pain In The Neck For Cena & WWE

John Cena appears to be out of action for an indefinite period of time.

The former WWE Champion had an MRI done over the weekend and its results showed that he had an injured neck.

He had been suffering from numbness in his hands leading up to the evaluation and it appeared that he had herniated discs in the neck.

Cena will certainly require surgery and this will leave him out for anywhere up to and beyond twelve months. I say 'anything and up to' because there has been situations where wrestler's have had neck surgery and been cleared within months. Kurt Angle, for example, had a quick surgery layoff but this didn't really help him as it was around the time where he became hooked on painkillers and left his neck extremely delicate.

I'd say the most successful layoff from such a surgery was Edge. He took a little over a year to return and, as far as I am aware, he has managed to keep his neck in an acceptable state.

I would suggest Cena goes for the longer route. There's no point throwing away a career and long-term health for a quick return to the ring. He should just walk away for the time being and take the year or more off and come back with the neck in a decent state.

I'm worried that we won't see that, though.

Cena returned months before he was meant to after he got himself injured last year. His pectoral muscle tear was meant to have shelved him for six months but he returned three months later.

His replacement at Unforgiven is Rey Mysterio. Another wrestler who has had countless injuries over the last few years.
