On Monday evening I was looking through ProWrestling.net's regular updates and read a comment Jason Powell had made about Floyd Mayweather. Apparently, the WWE had at first considered using Mayweather in the heel role for his appearances in the build-up to WrestleMania.
Powell didn't agree. He thought it would have been wiser of the company to have introduced him the way they did - as the babyface.
I thought I would email Powell and offer my opinion on the topic.
I told him that I understood where the WWE was coming from in entertaining the idea of Mayweather coming in as the bad-guy. My thought process was that it had worked well for him in boxing generating hype for his previous fights. Both, may I add, were the two best selling pay-per-views in the US during 2007.
Jason ended up putting my email up on his site with his own response explaining how he thought it would appeal to the mainstream if he was the babyface. I could see his point, too.
A few hours later, Monday Night Raw aired and things changed.
Mayweather, playing the babyface role, was booed during his segment with The Big Show in what was the next step in the feud leading to the event in the Spring.
Yesterday afternoon, Jason Powell wrote an editorial once again mentioning my opinion on Mayweather as a heel and how he is starting to think that it could be the best route to take having the boxer playing the antagonist in the angle.
I'm not sure whether it is too late to do this now that the feud has been put into motion. One thing is for sure, it hasn't really hit the mainstream in a big way. Yet.
