Cage Clone

I was informed that there was a cage-fighting event live on Sky Sports last night so I tuned in to watch it. I wish I hadn't.

The show was a British clone of the UFC called Cage Rage, or was that Rage Cage? Either way it was the most ridiculous mixed martial arts event I have ever seen.

The Brits tried too hard to be like their American counterparts. It reminded me of when the British wrestling companies tried to jump on the coattails of the WWF during the initial wrestling boom over here and they tried their best at the glitz and glamour. They failed.

Last night we had a rapper hyping up the crowd as his fighter - wearing a gold mask - walked to the eight-sided cage. The fighter in question was nicknamed 'The Ninja'. Lame.

There was one good moment where an Australian fighter was knocked out within seconds. His opponent then did a celebratory jig over the cage which was the most lively he was able to be after such a short fight.

The commentators were a pair of butch looking skinheads. They reminded me more of Right Said Fred than legitimate play-by-play announcers. Still, I wouldn't mess with them. They seemed a bit tougher than their musical lookalikes.

The next show is scheduled for March 2008. I'll give it a miss.
