I will always remember 2007 as being one of the worst years I have ever experienced as a wrestling fan. It seems that each year the world of wrestling loses a handful of grapplers but 2007 was a lot worse.
We lost Bam Bam Bigelow, one of my favourite heels from my childhood.
Sherri Martel was another casualty of the wrestling culture. She and I had corresponded a number of times over email since 2004. She was one of the best baddies in the business.
And then there was Chris Benoit.
Chris Benoit spent twenty years building up a legacy. It took him one weekend to destroy that and everything else in his life.
The Benoit suicide was the most shocking death in wrestling ever. If he had simply killed himself it would have been tragic. What made it all the more devastating was he murdered his wife and son before commiting his final act.
The wrestling culture seems to have accepted the long list of deaths attributed to being part of the business. When two innocent people become victims of the dark-side of professional wrestling then something needs to be done.
2007 was the tip of the iceberg. Did the wrestling companies learn anything from it?
