Survival Sunday

It's the final day of the Premier League season. One more team will be going down to the Championship but who will it be - Sheffield United, West Ham or Wigan Athletic?

I think the fight to avoid relegation is just as interesting as the battle to win the league trophy. The last day - or Survival Sunday as it is known in many circles - is one of the most exciting days in the Premiership.

Wigan are favourites to make the drop but there is a big cloud dangling over how their result against Sheffield United will play out.

Sheffield and Wigan are both angry at the way the Premier League officials haven't docked points against West Ham United for playing Carlos Tevez.

Tevez joined the Hammers on the last day of the transfer window last summer and there was an illegal representation on who actually owned the player. As he played for West Ham the club were in breach of the rules and were fined.

Other clubs who have done this in the past have been stripped of points. The clubs hovering above or in the relegation zone - are aghast that the Premier Legue had not kept to this precedence.

It had opened up a lot of talk of potential conspiracies in this final day because Sheffield United and Wigan are both playing each other. If Wigan snatch a victory they could stay in the league and West Ham could go down if the Hammers are unable to keep at least a draw against the champions, Manchester United.

Another possible outcome is if Wigan and West Ham win their games, Sheffield United will be playing Championship football next season.

Nobody could have scripted this better. The final scene is about to be played out.
