I did my usual NFL betting this weekend and am currently sitting on £1 profit. I still have one game to go and it could potentially give me an extra £10 to what I made.
Something has caught my attention over the last few weeks with betting on the sport and that is how close the bookmakers have set the lines.
A line is what they set when they compare the two teams. For instance - if a team is extremely strong and up against a weak defence they may give the favourite a fourteen point handicap. This means that - if you bet - the team needs to win by at least the fourteen points in order to win.
The linemakers also set the point spread and this means they give the match a certain amount of points and then the bettors say whether it will go over or under the set points.
I had a bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers versus San Diego Chargers game. The line was set at thirty-seven and I bet that the points would go over that amount. I was watching the WWE last night so had my eye on NFL.com watching the live score update and it was looking good.
Or so I thought.
The game ended 23-13 to the Chargers. I mised a return of my stake by one point and a profit by two.
I think these Vegas bookmakers are amazing when it comes to studying how a game will go. Their vision always seems to be right on the money and the score is close to what they set.
A suspicious side of me would think that there are people on the pitch fixing the results as well. But I wouldn't think like that...
Would I????
