The Gorilla Incident

I found the story about the Cincinnati Zoo having to shoot dead one of its gorillas because a four-year old found his way into the enclosure quite shocking.

The video footage made it even more disturbing.

Upon watching it, I sort of have a feeling the staff at the zoo did the right thing. But my opinion came after careful thought.

It absolutely looks like the gorilla was helping the child. The eyewitnesses, including the mother, made the situation all the more worse by panicking (can't blame them, to be honest. Can blame the mother for evidently not keeping an eye on her child, though) and it got the gorilla agitated. Even though he seemed to want to protect the child the way he was doing it may have resulted in serious injury or death.

It's a tough call and it took me ages to think it through. Can't help but feel for the gorilla but also the keepers who had to make an on-the-spot decision and destroy the endangered animal.
