2025: The Year In Review

At the start of each year, I publish a post with a handful of predictions for the next fifty-two weeks. I then follow that up, on the final day of said year, with a look to see whether any of the guesses came true.

For January 1st 2025, I wrote out thirteen things. Let's see how I fared.

Aaron Rodgers will become a Green Bay Packer again (on a one-day contract to announce his retirement!)

Rodgers didn't retire. He left the New York Jets and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He could make the playoffs if he and his team are able to overcome the Baltimore Ravens.

The Buffalo Bills versus Detroit Lions will be the Super Bowl game

It didn't happen. The Bills and Lions did make it to the 2024 playoffs. The Lions were upset by the Washington Commanders, with a score of 45-31, in the divisional round while the Bills stumbled to a 29-32 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship decider. The Chiefs went on to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in the big game.

WWE's live shows on Netflix will end up gaining a lot of complaints due to streaming issues

I cannot really say whether I've noticed anything as I expected. I have to consider this one a miss by yours truly.

Amazon will not renew Neighbours and the show will either be picked up by another TV platform or will end

This one was a correct call. Amazon did indeed make the decision not to renew Neighbours. No new home was found for the Aussie soap, so it ended its forty-year run a few weeks ago.

John Cena will challenge for either of the major world titles at WrestleMania with the story being it's his chase to beat Ric Flair's 'record' title wins in what is going to be Cena's retirement year

I had this one right. Cena won the title from Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 41 to break the 'record'. He did so weeks after a surprising heel turn. It was one of the lamest heel turns in history because Cena was back to being a good guy by SummerSlam.

Pep Guardiola will no longer be in charge of Manchester City by Christmas Day

I was wrong.

By Halloween, Anthony Richardson will no longer be the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts

I was right. Daniel Jones won the role of starting quarterback for the Colts during the preseason.

Speaking of the Colts, they'll have a new general manager

Not correct. I'd bet on it happening in 2026, but stranger things have happened.

Wayne Rooney will not manage a football club at all during 2025

I'm certain this turned out to be an accurate guess. Rooney has been working a lot of TV coverage.

Yota Tsuji will win the G1 Climax

I'm actually annoyed at this one. I sensed Tsuji would be New Japan's next big thing, so felt that the rocket would be attached to him ready for ascent on January 4th 2026. To get there, he would have to win the G1. Well, he didn't win the tournament. Konosuke Takeshita secured the right to a January 4th title match, but opted to cash it in early and won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship from Zack Sabre Jr. in October. Guess who's now going to challenge Takeshita on January 4th 2026? Yep - Tsuji! My guess was on the right track, but on a delayed train.

I will read at least seven Stephen King books in 2025

I read eight. I started with 2001's Dreamcatcher and ended with The Colorado Kid.

There will be joint winners of the Booker Prize

There was a solo winner in David Szalay with the brilliant Flesh. You can read my Booker Prize diary of 2025 by FOLLOWING THIS LINK.

Wham's Last Christmas will be the Christmas Number One once again

It wasn't. This year's winner was Kylie Minogue's XMAS.

As usual, a lot of misses but a few hits. I'm really bugged by my Yota Tsuji pick because it was very close.

* * *

Tomorrow would have been the day I published my predictions for 2026. However, I intend to put that one on hold for twenty-four hours because I'd like to write a bit more about 2025 in tomorrow's post.

January 1st 2026 also happens to be the twentieth anniversary of this very blog, so I have to acknowledge that somehow.

Until tomorrow, Happy New Year!
