Booker Prize 2025 Longlist Revealed

The 2025 Booker Prize Longlist has been confirmed.

I received the email containing the thirteen titles (AKA The Booker Dozen) a little over an hour ago. The contenders are:

  • Love Forms by Claire Adam
  • The South by Tash Aw
  • Universality by Natasha Brown
  • One Boat by Jonathan Buckley
  • Flashlight by Susan Choi
  • The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai
  • Audition by Katie Kitamura
  • The Rest of Our Lives by Ben Markovits
  • The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller
  • Endling by Maria Reva
  • Flesh by David Szalay
  • Seascraper by Benjamin Wood
  • Misinterpretation by Leddia Xhoga
Those books will be whittled down to six by Tuesday 23 September when the shortlist will be announced at a live event at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in London. That'll be the first time a shortlist reveal will be done in such a manner.

The winner of the 2025 Booker Prize will be announced at Old Billingsgate in London on Monday 10 November.

I'm eager to see which books make it to the shortlist. As of right now, I am still planning to do another Booker Prize Marathon.

A 2-Nighter To Close Out This Week

It's SummerSlam Week.

For the first time ever, the event will be held over two-nights with the first act taking place on Saturday and the second on Sunday.

It's too much. In my opinion.

The only event which should be a two-nighter is WrestleMania. Actually - strike that sole thought -  you could make a strong case for the Royal Rumble to have a couple of nights as one night could host the women's Rumble and the other could have the men's version of the battle royale.

Not SummerSlam, though. We don't need two nights for the third biggest event of the year.

Frosted Choc Orange Pop Tarts Set To Pop Up At A Supermarket Near You!

I read an article about new Kellogg's products this morning. It brought my attention to a new Pop Tarts flavour I'd like to try.

According to The Sun, the breakfast giants have released a Frosted Choco Orange flavour of their pastry snack.

I shouldn't judge a Pop Tart by its cover, but - looking at the image on the website page - it sure looks festive.

Pop Tarts - Choco Orange

The article states they can be purchased from Morrisons and Sainsbury's now but will - pardon the pun - pop up at Asda and Tesco sometime in September.

I'll be keeping an eye out for them.

The Hogan Tributes

As soon as I was up and ready, I watched last night's WWE Smackdown.

I thought the company did a classy tribute to Hulk Hogan. The show opened with the roster, and other WWE people, on the stage for a ten-bell salute. Following that was a six-plus minute video tribute which was well produced.

Sprinkled along the show were clips of key moments from Hogan's career.

It was superbly done.

As I am writing the post, I'm watching today's G1 Climax round on-demand. That event opened up with the New Japan Pro Wrestling crew standing around the ring for another ten-bell salute.

Both were different in their ways, but each were respectful.

Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan.

I've written - and typed! - those words many times since my childhood. Today, I do so a little under a day since the news broke of his passing.

Hulk Hogan Passes Away

I remember the first time I came across the then WWF Champion. It was on Saturday January 17th 1987. My dad would have likely been on the road with the rugby team he was associated with at the time. My mum would have been at work, so my sister and I would stay with my aunt on those kinds of Saturdays.

Those days were spent watching whatever morning shows were being served by the BBC and ITV. By the afternoon, we'd have the British wrestling on. That particular day saw something amazing happen in hindsight.

ITV's Professional Wrestling show opened with its usual theme song and clip of Big Daddy with 'Easy! Easy!' being chanted in the background. However, once that stopped, we were met by an American host.

ITV Wrestling - WWF

'Mean' Gene Okerlund was in the American studio hosting the show. To cut a long story short, one of the bouts that afternoon had Hulk Hogan taking on 'Macho Man' Randy Savage.

I vividly recall being mesmerised by what I saw that day. My young eyes witnessed a huge difference between the US product and what I had been accustomed to with the British variety of wrestling.

But, the WWF showing up on ITV on Saturdays was a one-off.

A short time after that, I watched Rocky III. Early in the film, Rocky Balboa took part in a boxer versus wrestler exhibition match. Hulk Hogan portrayed the role of 'Thunderlips'. Upon seeing Hogan in the film, I thought to myself 'oh, he's a real wrestler because he was on the wrestling'.

Or something along the lines.

It might have been an episode of The A-Team when Hogan and I crossed paths again. I'd bet I was at my aunt's home on a Saturday afternoon for that one as well.

And then Sky TV came along.

I went to stay with my relatives in west Wales during the spring of 1989. As we were settling in, my uncle came into the room and told us he had recently bought a satellite dish. I was ecstatic because Sky had a big proper launch in the UK weeks earlier.

We spent most of the evenings of that time away watching Sky. On one of those occasions, an advert for WrestleMania V came on the screen. There he was again - Hulk Hogan!

'You should ask your dad to get Sky, so you can watch that,' my uncle advised.

By the summer, we actually did have a satellite dish of our own because my dad won one in a Sunday newspaper.

It was the WWF every week from there right through to this very day.

Seeing as Hogan was the most memorable figure from my first introduction to US wrestling, he was the wrestler I chose as my favourite in those developing years as a fan of US professional wrestling.

It was quite a ride. As I sit here, I have far too many memories to unload right now. I think the best thing for me to do is spend days, possibly weeks, jotting down everything and then sharing it in a second post somewhere down the road.

Until then, I want to make one thing clear: I wouldn't be as invested in professional wrestling if not for Hulk Hogan.  That's not hyperbole. That's a fact, Jack.

Rest in peace, brother.

Travel Day

It is a travel day for the competitors of the NJPW G1 Climax. Therefore, I have a free day of my own (ha!).

We're four days in already. I have to be fair - or unfair, I guess - but I am not completely invested in this year's tourney.

I sense I could have felt the same in the early part last year. And maybe before that. I know I'll be more locked in by the midpoint and beyond. I always am.

So far, I've watched three nights (or rather - days) live. Sunday's 6AM BST start was viewed on-demand.

Tomorrow's round begins at 10:30AM. Those are the perfect starts for me. Saturday's is at 7AM BST. Not so perfect for me!

Ozzy Osbourne Passes Away

What a way to go.

That was the first thing I thought of when the news of Ozzy Osbourne's passing broke yesterday evening.

It had only been less than three weeks ago when I wrote about Black Sabbath's swansong concert, which was held at Villa Park.

And now we've all been met with the news that the retirement night was one of Ozzy's final acts entirely.

Looking solely at this at Ozzy as the performer: I genuinely don't think it could have been written perfectly. He was able to experience that final concert with all of those peers, family and fans. I repeat: what a way to go.
