I was quite stunned, yesterday afternoon, when I was told Ricky Hatton had passed away.
I had a lot of time for Hatton's boxing career whether I thought he would win or lose against opposition. And everything that came with it like the press conferences and media tours. He was brilliant.
Just thinking back to some of those classic fights, and the way the crowd loved him with his Blue Moon ring entrance.
Just stunning to think he died relatively young.
The way his death happened reminds me a lot of the day the news of Gary Speed's passing hit. That was also relayed on a Sunday afternoon and it was my father who told me about that one as well.
I read and posted a brief review of Hatton's autobiography back in the day. I didn't write about it in the post, but one of the things I remember from reading it was the best display of Hatton's fun side was shown.
He and his friends used to have a competition when they'd go out clubbing to be the person with the worst shirt.
It made me laugh because I think it showed that the fun side of Hatton's character wasn't all for show if he did that sort of thing away from the cameras.
Such shocking news.
