Earlier this year, I published a post noting that Warner Bros. was entertaining the idea of creating new Gremlins and Goonies films.
There has been a development to one part of the story.
In the January 16th post, I pointed out that The Goonies 2 was not even off the ground. No script had been created. At that stage, a treatment had been broached. And that was all.
Well - a little over a month later - I have now read that things are moving.
According to Variety, Potsy Ponciroli has been tasked with writing a script for a sequel to the 1985 classic.
The movie will be produced by Amblin Entertainment, so - just like with the original - Steven Spielberg's name will be associated with the project.
Chris Columbus, who penned the script of The Goonies, will also get producer credit alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario.
Another name involved with the potential sequel is Lauren Shuler Donner, who is the wife of the late Richard Donner (The Goonies' director). She'll serve as the movie's executive producer.
I have a lot of misgivings about this movie. It's one of those films I feel does not need a sequel. Or, if it ever did, it should have been a few years after the first movie. Not forty-plus years later.
You could say I feel the ship sailed on this a long time ago.
