Euro 2024: The Aftermath

In yesterday's post, I shared a couple of scenarios I thought would play out in the Euro 2024 final between England and the eventual winners - Spain.

I suggested the idea that Spain would dominate the English side. That didn't completely happen because the game was tied 0-0 for the first half and England managed to draw level after Spain scored the first sometime in the second half. Spain went on to score the winner later in the half.

My second theory was one which figured into the fact that England had scraped through the knockout stages of the tournament by coming back from behind. I predicted that would not happen. Instead, I felt England would get the first goal in the game and retain the lead.

As you can gather, the second theory didn't turn out.

Yes, this is hindsight, but the narrative kind of makes more sense - I should have really guessed how it eventually played out because England did go one down and tied it up. I should have then guessed their luck - from the previous games - would have already ran out and the third goal would have gone to Spain.

And that, my friends, is how it went.

Anyway, it's all done and dusted. Spain was the deserving team. Not just for last night. The entire tournament.

I don't think it's any secret that Gareth Southgate's time as England boss is possibly over.  I might come across as being ironic considering I dislike the England team, but - I will go so far as to state this: Gareth Southgate has been a great manager for that team.

They should be careful when it comes to replacing him because I truly believe they'll struggle post-Southgate.

Better the devil you know.

And all that.
