The man who famously won a Super Bowl as coach of the Raiders before going on to win many television awards for his career as a football broadcaster will also be known to non-American football fans simply because he gave his name to the Madden NFL franchise of video games.
In all my years of following the NFL, my favourite commentary team was Al Michaels and Madden. They were a great pairing and it was a sad day when Madden called time on his broadcast career.
A few days ago, a documentary all about John Madden aired on US TV. I thought, even back then, that it was quite eerie because it felt more like a tribute to someone who had passed away. It seems even more eerie now considering he died a few days later.
