A Kitchen Appliance Scam (?)

I had a phone call this morning and I am not 100% convinced it was a scam. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for the moment by giving it a 1% chance of it not being one.

What happened was this.

I answered the call. The lady on the other end said that she was calling about the warranty of my kitchen appliances. She claimed they were running out (in reality: they are) and said she could renew them over the phone.

Unsure whether this was legit or not, I asked which company she was from.

'The warranty department'

'The warranty department where?' I asked.

She then named a company that didn't sound right. I cannot recall the name as I write this.

I proceeded to ask her which appliances were running out. She responded with 'your fridge and freezer'. I then asked 'which brand are those appliances' (in reality: I have a fridge freezer not 'fridge and freezer' and wanted to see if she would slip up by naming two differing brands).

She said it was from the 'Hotpoint Family'.

My fridge freezer, I believe, is NOT in the family.

I then asked for the model number and she told me that 'I don't have that information, that's only for the engineers'.

I sensed I was being lied to, so asked her to write it all in a letter.

Like I said, I don't have a Hotpoint fridge freezer, but we do have a dishwasher. Even though I sense it's a scam, I want to see if they do get in touch with more details.

For now, it's best to be safe than sorry.
