World Wrestling Entertainment announced the firing of Abraham Washington on Friday.
The wrestling manager was released from his contract eleven days after the company had to issue an on-air apology after Washington - whilst in character - told a rape joke by referencing something NBA basketball star, Kobe Bryant, was alleged to have done.
The apology happened a number of minutes after Washington uttered the sentence showing that WWE feared that the controversial remark would make the mainstream.
And it did.
News sources like TMZ ran with the story. However, I'll have to hand it to WWE for owning the issue and acknowledging the thing shouldn't have been said.
Washington also made a Twitter post regretting what he had said on live television.
The manager was back on television on Smackdown and this past week's episode of Raw so I assumed that he had got away with a telling off or a fine.
I didn't expect to read that he was fired.
Don't get me wrong - if the guy was at fault, which he was, then he should have been fired. I just don't understand how the company decided eleven days after the incident to release him.
If they truly felt that he should have been punished, he should have been suspended and then ultimately fired. No way should they have put him on TV before they made the ultimate decision on his future.
It's a weird one, isn't it?
The conspiracy theorist in me is making me believe that this firing had more to do with a certain person's campaign for a Senate seat rather than doing what should have been done initially.
Either way, the journey to the right decision was made. It just took a number of detours along the way.
