On This Day In History : 1992

Britain's biggest wrestling event took place twenty years ago today.

I am of course talking about the World Wrestling Federation's SummerSlam 1992 which took place inside Wembley Stadium.

The original event took place on Saturday 29th August. It aired on television two days later.

It was a jam-packed card but the two highlights of the show were the WWF Championship match where The Ultimate Warrior challenged Randy Savage and the main event of the night which saw the 'British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith defeat his brother-in-law, Bret 'Hitman' Hart, to claim the WWF Intercontinental Championship in front of the over eighty thousand in attendance.

Back then, I was a major Ultimate Warrior fan and wanted to see my guy win the WWF title.

He didn't.

These two matches were built awesomely.

I spent the entire summer hooked on the animosity that had built between Savage and Warrior fuelled by the question of whose corner Mr. Perfect was going to be in. He wasn't in either - he and Ric Flair were playing mind games.

The main event had its drama, too. For the first time that I can recall, it was revealed that Davey Boy Smith was the husband to Bret's sister so there was a family rift that was settled in the ring that night.

I was thirteen when this took place. Looking back, I should have nagged my parents to take me just that little bit harder because I regret not having been there to see it live.
