I spent a good part of yesterday handicapping the Premier League, Championship and Leagues 1 & 2 in order to have a fun bet on the season handicap markets that are offered at the bookmakers.
The method I adopt to get my results makes use of the Racing & Football Outlook pre-season forecasts. I place each team in the position that the newspaper predicts they'll finish and then give them the handicap points that the betting shops have listed them as. Once this is done, I look at the past eight seasons and check the average points per position. For example, the team that finishes in tenth position in the Premier League has an average of 49 points.
Once I've added the handicap points with the position points, the spreadsheet sorts the division in order.
Below are the four leagues with the top three teams. The handicap points given by the bookmaker is in parenthesis.
League 2
Chesterfield (8) 97pts
Aldershot (22) 97pts
Southend (11) 95pts
League 1
MK Dons (3) 97pts
Notts County (10) 97pts
Brentford (10) 88pts
Championship
Cardiff (6) 98pts
Blackpool (11) 97pts
Watford (17) 94pts
Premier League
Reading (46) 93pts
Man City (0) 88pts
West Brom (39) 88pts
I selected the top team in each league for my bet. In the case where the top two had the same total points, I chose the squad with the most points.
