That's Al, Folks

Al Davis - owner of the Oakland Raiders - passed away on Saturday at the age of eighty-two.

I have been a fan of American football for years but had a long lay-off from the sport during young adulthood  but, when I came back, Davis still being associated with the Raiders was not a surprise to me.

His involvement with pro football had been criticised in recent years because many felt he didn't move with the times.

It will now be interesting to see how the Raiders move forward now that their figurehead has gone.

* * *

I heard of Al Davis' death when I was listening to an American radio station in the early hours of Sunday morning.

One of my initial thoughts was how the news would affect the team in their game against Houston.

The Raiders were a five-point underdog against the Texans and I was tempted to have a small wager on the side. I sensed they would at least cover the five points.

I talked myself out of having the flutter, though.

Oakland did do what I thought they would. Not only did they cover the point spread, they won straight-up.

The final score: Oakland 25 Houston 20.
