Bret Hart.
New U.S. Champion.
Who would have ever thought that - in 2010 - I would open a post with these two sentences?
Hart won the title last night on WWE Monday Night Raw in a smoke-and-mirrors type match where his limitations were disguised by distractions from The Hart Dynasty, Chris Jericho and his opponent, The Miz. All these performers did the work.
Hart winning the title in his home country must be seen by many as a good swansong to his recent WWE return.
I'm not in that group.
Sure, it was a good moment for Bret and the fans in the building and watching at home. It just wasn't a good move for the long-term.
Back when I was younger, wrestling titles meant a lot. Nowadays, they are mere props and I know I shouldn't be as vexed over the title changing in this manner in 2010. I just don't see anything good coming out of it other than the pop he got last night.
The WWE had a potential U.S. Title feud between The Miz and Bryan Danielson in the works which would have been the best way to have the title change hands.
They can always end up putting the belt back on The Miz and then have Danielson take it from him - it has lost a step now, though.
I hate being an armchair booker - I just feel this was a bad long-term move.
In closing, I have one final thought:
If the Montreal screwjob was caused because of Bret refusing to drop a belt on one of his final appearances for the company in 1997, why would they hand him a title victory on one of his final nights in 2010?
It's baffling.
