The Fall Of Portsmouth F.C.

I am not surprised that Portsmouth Football Club will be relegated from the Premier League today. However, I didn't envision them losing their place due to going into administration.

This past summer, the three Premier League bets I had on my shortlist were - Manchester City to win without the top four, Chelsea to win overall and Portsmouth to be relegated.

I opted for the - what I felt at the time - safe option of Chelsea (and they're doing well so far, by the way).

It has nearly been two years since Portsmouth lifted the FA Cup and they have been sinking ever since.

I knew things were going from bad to worse when - during a game on television in October - their majority stakeholder, Ali al-Faraj, was seeing mingling with the fans whilst wearing a Portsmouth team shirt.

It reminded me of what Mike Ashley did at Newcastle United. Not something that ended up being a positive move to make in the long-run.

Portsmouth's woes are far more worse than Newcastle's were this time last year. Newcastle look to be bouncing back up - I don't think Portsmouth will be in a position to be as resilient.
