Orig Williams

I just found out that one of Wales' most famous wrestlers - Orig Williams - passed away at the age of seventy-eight.

In my time as a wrestling fan, Williams was famous for being the person behind the Reslo television programme which aired on S4C during the nineties. Reslo was the last wrestling show to air on terrestrial TV.

I have my own personal Orig Williams story which is quite funny.

Back when I was a youngster, I had dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. I had no wrestling schools within my immediate vicinity and nor did I have an idea how to go about finding out where I could be trained. One Saturday morning, I was looking through one of the supplements that came with the Western Mail newspaper and there was an interview with Orig Williams in there.

I read it and decided that - when I was old enough - I would get in touch with Orig Williams as he was the closest person to me who was in the business.

The picture had Orig Williams laying on his front in a field holding mushrooms for some reason.

I remember pulling out that page and keeping it for years.

As you've probably realised - I didn't end up getting in touch with him. In fact, I haven't thought of him in years so it was slightly surprising to see him featured on Friday's news where they announced his passing.
