I read today that Going For Gold is coming back to television.
This was one of my favourite game shows growing up. I didn't manage to catch it all the time as it was on during school. I did see it during the holidays, though.
Whilst on the subject of game shows, it has brought back fond memories of one I liked and another I absolutely loved.
Remote Control - Anyone remember this? I recall watching it during the Summer of 1992 whilst on holiday in Poole. My memory is hazy but I know Frank Sidebottom was involved with it and the crowd would chant at the contestants when they were eliminated from the game.
The Interceptor - This one only lasted a series and I was gutted when ITV didn't renew it. It was so far ahead of its time that I think it could be brought back to our screens today and get a whole new following.
It was like Treasure Hunt and The Running Man rolled into one.
Two contestants were each given a backpack - one contained money and the other didn't have anything. Neither one of the contestants (a couple) knew which bag contained the prize.
They were then both sent up in a helicopter and split up and had to make their way back to a specific location.
The problem with meeting back up is they had to ensure the backpacks weren't zapped by the bad guy on the show - The Interceptor.
The baddie would have a remote control attached to his wrist and he would track down both the contestants in his own helicopter, motorcycle or car and attempt to aim the remote at the backpack which contained sensors which picked up the signal from the wrist remote.
If the sensor did pick up The Interceptor's signal it would lock the case and prevent the contestant from opening the prize at the rendezvous point at the end of the episode.
It sounds a little complicated from my write-up and I am sure I missed some key things out but I am sure something like this could come back and be as good as it was in the 1980's.
If shows like Going For Gold, Bullseye and The Krypton Factor can return with a twenty-first Century face-lift - I am sure The Interceptor can.
