I was shown a video on Youtube of Jake 'The Snake' Roberts being out of it on drugs whilst at an independent wrestling show this weekend and thought it was a shame.
Roberts left a rehab facility earlier this year after taking up WWE's offer of free rehabilitation to current and former employees. The course was touted as being successful, he claimed to have been the cleanest he had been in years.
His alcohol and drug addictions have hindered him both personally and professionally for years and it wasn't the first time the fans were told by the man himself that a corner had been turned.
Jake would often say 'never trust a snake' during his interviews during his run as a heel. How prophetic these words have become today.
The clip showed Jake totally out of it, stumbling to the ring and cutting an incoherent promo at the beginning of the match. The wrestler he was facing (who shall not be named - more on this later) ended up pinning him immediately in a shoot pin.
Another wrestler came out in an attempt to attack Jake to send the crowd home happy but 'The Snake' didn't sell the punches and just stood in the ring out of it. When these moves weren't being sold, the wrestler started to throw legit punches at him.
The first wrestler even got on the mic and started abusing Jake for being a drug addict and ruining it for everyone.
The clip concludes outside the arena with Jake being verbally attacked by the wrestlers. The former WWE star is in tears with all this anger directed at him.
One of Roberts' assistants published a press release yesterday claiming that the wrestler had been given a drink at the show. He believed it to be a soft drink but obviously wasn't.
I'm not sure whether to believe this excuse.
I can see that it's possible and that the promoters did something like this to get themselves publicity. That's why I am refusing to name any of their names in this post. If they had done it -that's disgusting.
But, then you have to ask yourself about the addict. A person who will lie to hide his demons. It's very possible the spiked drink story is a cover-up.
Either way, Jake's story is one without a happy ending. It's dreadful to see it play out before our very eyes.
