Steve Irwin

It must have been less than a month ago - I was watching one of Steve Irwin's television shows with my father and a scene of him jumping out of the way of a crocodile appeared on the end credits.

I remarked that he was such a risk taker and that one day he could end up seriously injured.

I didn't envision it would end like this, though.

I was listening to the Sports Byline radio station at six this morning. As the new NFL season is about to get under way I have started listening to American radio shows in the hope of catching some news that will, hopefully, lead me to make some good betting decisions over the next few months.

The news opened with 'Crocodile Hunter Dead'. I didn't need any other explanation. Steve Irwin had passed away.

I awaited the news to break over here in the UK and when it did I was shocked to see that it was from a stingray. It seems kind of ironic that one of the least dangerous animals, when compared to the many wild ones Irwin dealt with, was the one that fatally wounded him.

I think Steve Irwin's exciteable personality was a breath of fresh air. If I was a young child watching him I know for a fact it would have made me more interested in wildlife. He did a lot for the education of today's youth.

But bear in mind that it wasn't two young children watching that show a few weeks ago; It was a twenty seven and sixty year old. Proof that he was universal to all.

It's a shame - even more so to his family as he leaves behind two young children.

Rest in peace.
